As another poster has already mentioned Eden Lake takes the biscuit for me.
I remember sitting in complete silence as the credits rolled then as the minutes passed became more and more angry. It took me a fair few days to get that film out of my system! |

A russian film (i think) about two guys working on an oil rig (...i think) who slowly go insane. Fantastic film, but unfortunately I can't remember the name.

The Road - Very intense, emotional and bleak. Very much like the book. Affected me for quite a while after watching it.
Threads - Watched it first in 2005, and thought how depressing it was. I imagine watching it at the time of the cold war when it was broadcast would be very frightening. Children of Men - Very grim, found nothing in it that gave me any hope for humanity. But a very well made film and well acted. Quite a bit different from the book this one. Never Let Me Go - A very moving and deep film. Superbly acted and directed. Left me feeling very emotional. Keira Knightley was outstanding. I though the character of Tommy and the whole "completion" storyline gave a feeling of hopelessness that these people were not in control of their own destiny and just accepted they were alive for donation. My Mum went to see this at the cinema as a lot of the filming was done where she lives. Said it was the bleakest film she had seen. The Lovely Bones - I found this to be very upsetting and in some ways also very beautiful. It was grim but compelling. Added to by the Brian Eno soundtrack. Always find these things are more depressing when centred around children. |

War Zone
The Road Both suberbly depressing and emotionally exercising work. Sometimes it's refershing to have your other emotional sense challenged with a movie rather the the usual sugary diabetic highs they are always trying to get you to. I will definatly have a look at many others stated here. |

Get Carter, a very bleak crime movie (original version - the remake is depressing for other reasons!)

Another vote for Eden Lake! Never have I watched a film and felt so low afterwards. The misery is just relentless, and the ending....argh

I can't believe how many people are saying 'The Mist'. I just thought it was rubbish.
Agree that 'Requiem for a Dream' left me completely drained. And I expected to be emotionally wiped out by 'Melancholia', but it was such a beautiful movie. |

Agreed "The Road" & "Grave of the Fireflies",but going back decades and dont think Ive seen it in recent years, what about the remake of "Invasion of the Body snatchers.".........when right at the end, Donald Sutherland "screams" at Brooke Adams and we realise hes turned into a walking Tomatoe plant too.......................one of the first films Id seen in which the Aliens won !

Spoiler
I don't as a rule watch bleak depressing films if I can at all help it, but I watched Snowtow at the weekend not realising just how grim it was going to be. I don't feel I'm going to be able to get certain scenes out of my head for a long time. |
