Suggest a phone for a 13 year old boy?

My son isn't especially interested in phones, but has just said he'd like a new one, maybe a touchscreen. He'd like to be able to get facebook and youtube easily, and as it's not a birthday or Christmas present I don't want to spend a fortune. Any ideas?

I was looking at the Galaxy Y (the Ace is a bit expensive tbh).

It has to be Virgin or unlocked, as I have a rolling contract for him which is a decent deal. Is the Galaxy easy to use?

Sony Xperia Mini.
Close to high end spec so runs ICS as can all the xperia range.
Best branded sub £100 phone around. Small screen, but that might suit.

I can vouch for that, I bought one from Carphone Warehouse 3 weeks ago, brilliant value and unlocked. Nice and fast, too-the maps in particular are stunning.

Still a bit much for a 13 year old boy, no? I'd not really want to spend more than half that if I were the OP.

Galaxy y, simple and cheap enough but more than adequate for your son's needs.

My wife has just upgraded from one and my daughter still has hers, nice little phones.

You aren't going to get anything half decent for £50.
I would ask around the parents of his friends and see what they have. If it's a blackberry circle, then he'll be wanting to bbm along with the rest of them....
the galaxy Y is good little phone for his age group if android is the way they are leaning...

Whichever phone you go for, make sure it's pay as you go only...

How about he saves up his pocket money? A 13 year old asking for a touch screen phone. Eek.

I have to agree with you, this should be a birthday/Christmas present.

Wouldn't a capped contract be just as good / effective ?

Capped would be perfect. Capped voice minutes, unlimited internet, unlimited texts, no premium numbers etc.

No way to get nasty surprises in the bank account then.

Samsung Galaxy Y.

Wifi too, for such a cheap phone, so internet access at no extra cost.

And it is a smart looking phone.

I have a rolling contract for him, it's Virgin and £7 a month. He gets something like 120 minutes and a couple of thousand texts and 500 mb. So it's not bad really, I think he'd use more than £7 on a regular pay n go.

I know it's bit much to buy him a new phone when it's not a birthday or anything, he never asks for anything normally though so maybe if we can find a Galaxy for a decent price we'll spoil him for once.

It also depends what phone his Friends have - but a Blackberry 9320 is excellent value for money at £129.95

Capped doesn't protect you when abroad, as it takes time for call logs to get to Britain, many reports of this, £1,000+ charged.

ie, if phone / sim stolen and used abroad before reported stolen, and acknowledged by provider ! , high costs.

OP, I used the galaxy y myself after my iPhone was stolen and I was waiting for an upgrade. I used it for about 1 month and it was really easy to use. A nice little smart phone, good for texting, light Web browsing, Facebook etc.

I don't know, I got my son on the cheapest 02 sim only contract for £13.50 a month and he never goes over. He's 12.

How about an Orange San Francisco or a Samsung Wave Y (not Android) on PAYGo?
