They are different but both are excellent in their way. It's just such a good story!

Also in the book, so it was nice to see it included.

I really like the remake. It's on ITV3 quite a lot these days.

The original was just an insult to the book.

I think the remake was an insult to the book.

All that "bad relationship with my dentist father" crap.

Though admittedly the original didn't stick to the book all that much either!

At least when it varied from the book in the remake they were somewhat conceivable ideas. Willy Wonka could've had a bad father relationship within the world of the book. Charlie couldntve been American with no father in the book. There were just too many unnecessary Americanisations for my liking.

The film isn't even called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If you're going to use someone like Roald Dahls material you should respect it. He hated the original film.

Aye. He wanted Spike Milligan to play Willy Wonka.

Didn't Roald Dahl also hate The Witches film?

Does anyone know if Roald Dahl like any of the films of his books?

One story of his that I always thought would have made a good film was The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

I'm not sure but I always got the impression he'd have enjoyed Danny the Champion of the World.

And I doubt he would've liked Matilda.

Certainly not.

I'm seeing a theme here. I think that Dahl (like me) couldn't abide precocious little American child actors!

Especially when they're thrust into Dahl stories for no good reason.

It was a favourite of mine when I was little. But at the end of the day it's not faithful to the book and that's why I don't think he would've liked it.

Dahl didn't like The Witches because it changed the ending so dramatically.

He didn't like Willy Wonka because he thought the script was altered from his own version and he didn't think Gene Wilder fit the role as much as Spike Milligan would have. I can't imagine he'd have liked the Depp version - his portrayal was even less like the character in the book; instead, he modelled it on Michael Jackson for some unfathomable reason.

The original film is dire, even Dahl thought so.

I often think that a lot of authors must hate the movie adaptations of their books. Maybe their pay cheque helps soften the blow!

The original is a childhood favourite and still a film I watch every now and again. I also bought the soundtrack last year which is a great listen. I've seen the Tim Burton film a few times and really enjoyed it.
