Interested to read all this as I am looking at getting a tablet. I'm pretty sure I will go for an ipad but wondered if anyone could tell me if there is a significant difference in practice between a 16gb and a 32gb. Thanks.

I have a 16GB version and its fine for what i use it for, it has plenty of room for apps and games.

If you plan to store alot of music and films I would recommend the 32GB version.

Thanks for that. Can you still get some music and film on there though?

Great, thanks - think that's what I will go for then.

Final question - is there any real advantage in getting the 3G given that there is wifi in so many places?

I wish I opted for the 3G version, I won't make the same mistake next time.

Would be interested to hear why.

And when on some descriptions they say you can get a cellular version does that mean 3G?

Yeah that means 3G.

The reason is that I often find I'm somewhere with no WiFi and it would be really handy to have that option. I did tether to my phone but my current plan doesn't allow tethering.

If your data plan on your phone does allow tethering then it's not an issue.

I normally recommend against the 3G option if the would be owner has a phone that offers tethering via wifi. Depending on the volumes of traffic it is often cheaper to use the 3G data associated with your phone (especially when you factor in the extra cost of the 3G chip), rather than having a separate data contract.

Unfortunately iPads don't support tethering via bluetooth or USB

Another important consideration is that the current 4G ipad will never be able to connect to the 4G networks expected to roll out later this year. Nor will they connect to any 4G networks outside of northern America.

You can get a Three SIM for about a tenner that lasts 3 months which is often cheaper than adding tethering to your contract.

how much data for a tenner ? Also don't forget the cost of a dongle if your device does not have a sim slot.

As it was in relation to the iPad 3 3G you wouldn't need a dongle, just pop the SIM in.

3GB that lasts 3 months - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Bro.../dp/B003Z0T3X2

Once its done just throw it away and pop another one in.

...although don't forget that you still have to spend an extra £100 to get the 3G version.

That's a valid point, it's in fact cheaper to get a MiFi device and pop a three sim in it. For some reason I thought it was only £50 extra...

I don't have a 3G iPad but... doesn't it use a micro-Sim, which the link isn't. So you'd be getting the Stanley knive out to trim it to fit. Yes? Could be wrong, but thought I'd ask.

Ah, think I'm right. This would be the correct card:

yes its a micro sim but you can buy a stamp for a few quid which cuts it to the correct size.

£11.77 for 3GB (normally £20.99). Is the cheaper price normally available via 3rd parties?

I would still recommend that people check their phone tariffs first. My "unlimited" data on T-Mobile is 3Gb per month and I am allowed to tether
