Elton John - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (much better slowed down) and One Day at a Time

Not really a fan of Roxy Music but their version of Jealous Guy was better

Joe Cocker - With a Little Help from my Friends (again, better slowed down)

"Slow it down. Down down down down"

On the flip side, the WORST cover I think I've heard is Guns 'n Roses massacring Live and Let Die.

On second thoughts it's probably Cabin Crew covering Star to Fall.

Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers

Considerably better than the 1950s original version and significantly better than all other cover versions.

I don't remember the original version but I always preferred Jimmy Young's more upbeat version to the screeching of the Righteous Brothers. Likewise Whitney Houston's version of I will Always love you was atrocious - more a showing off of how long she could hold a note for than singing a song well.

Actually I think I prefer this instrumental version I've just found

He's hungering for his love's touch. Upbeat doesn't quite work in the context of the lyrics, well for me anyway.

Righteous Brothers every time.

To my fellow Righteous Brothers fans. I ran into Alex North (Composer) in an L. A.

bookstore around 1983. He was surprised I knew who he was - but I did. As he signed

several autographs for me - I asked him, Mr. North, in your expert opinion, who sings

"Unchained Melody" the best? He looked up an said, "why Bobby Hatfield - period. The

young man from Orange County." He said Hy Zaret (Lyrics) agreed - this version on 10-25-1965, The Andy Williams Show - had both families in tears. OK .....

I don't think it's a particularly classic song and when the Righteous Brothers sing it they sound so woeful but I guess given the subject matter it's supposed to be woeful - like Without You which I think is equally dire. Unchained Melody because it sounds so miserable I think works best as an instrumental.

Fair enough, if indeed the composer considers Bobby Hatfield's version the best ever, then I for one am not going to argue with that.

What you consider miserable I consider heartfelt. Hey ho.

Sorry but to me it sounds like one of those songs that dogs howl along to. When people sound in that much pain I can't see how it can be enjoyable.

I tried, I really did but that was radio-rock at its worst a la Nickelback.

Just a few observations. (This thread is becoming scary).

Whitney Houston's cover of "I'm Every Woman" is not a patch on Chaka Khan.

Blondie's "The Tide Is High" is not superior to The Paragons.

Geri Halliwell can barely sing, never mind outsing The Weather Girls!

The notion that Cher of all people could surpass Jimmy Cliff's version of Many rivers To Cross is horrendous!

The Beat's Tears Of A Clown better than Smokey Robinson & The Miracles? Ha ha . No!

Soft Cell better than Gloria Jones? Not a chance!

I love the original, but I think this rendition of "Hey Ya" acoustically performed by Will young - live - at CDUK (remember that programme?) in 2006, is a brilliant cover He's not just copied the original as is usually done, but he's completely transformed it and made it really rather beautiful

You have got to be joking.

I like Ferry singing Roxy Music songs, but I don't think I've heard another artist's song he's covered that he did not transform into an abomination.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I've always loved those two covers in particular. I can't listen to Dylan - his voice grates on me.

The Theme from M*A*S*H* by the Manic Street Preachers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRZpPnF-k_E <-- best cover of that theme!

I prefer the Sensational Alex Harvey Band's version of DELILAH ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vSLZs3kq2M

Sorry, Sir Tom, but if it's any consolation your version of KISS is better than Prince's!
