Live@Wimbledon Radio
James Vertigan
24-06-2012
A new service from the All England Lawn Tennis Club launches tomorrow, Live@Wimbledon is replacing the popular Radio Wimbledon service .

Live@Wimbledon Radio will be a joint service with Live@Wimbledon TV, available via the Wimbledon website - http://www.wimbledon.com/en_GB/interactive/index.html

The radio service will be available on three frequencies in the local area of Wimbledon - 87.7FM within a 5 mile radius of the AELTC, 96.3FM within Centre Court and 97.8FM within Court Number 1 - all these channels are available via the Wimbledon website and smartphone applications.

Although many of the voices of Radio Wimbledon have sadly been left out, many still remain. The Wimbledon website lists the presenting team as:

Marcus Buckland
Mary Rhodes
Ian Payne
Barry Cowan
Wayne Ferreira
Robbie Koenig
Chris Wilkinson
Arvind Parmar
Rupert Bell
Rob Nothman
Richard Flemming
Barry Millns
Philip Studd
Gigi Salmon
Lucie Ahl
Todd Martin
Tony Adamson
Richard Kaufman
I hope it will live up to the good reputation that Radio Wimbledon had...

Ah that explains why the pirates SLR on 97.7, Passion on 97.9 and I think it's Hot FM on 96.3 have all been targeted by OFCOM recently.

Thanks for the info James.

Although I think there's a bit of pirate activity in the 87.6-87.9 part of the band round this area (West) of London - don't know whether it's getting into the Wimbledon area though.

I thought Tony Adamson had long retired

Thanks for posting those details James, I had been wondering what the new Wimbledon radio service would be like and whether they'd retain many of the Radio Wimbledon crew.

I'm pleased to see the likes of Rupert Bell, Gigi Salmon and Richard Kaufman are among their number although it's a shame that the likes of Dave Luddy and Nigel Bidmead seem to have missed out. There are some good additions from BBC Radio too.

It'll be interesting to find out whether radio stations like talkSPORT opt to take the Dave Luddy International reports service or take updates from people involved with the new station, as they did with Radio Wimbledon last year.

Tony was 'the voice' of the Wimbledon public address for many years, before being 'released' last year in favour of an ex-umpire with a very dry and monotone delivery - far removed from the welcoming friendly 'chat' when Tony was on the speakers over the complex.

Good to see him back at SW19.

I gather that's the BBC Midlands Today Mary Rhodes being referred to?

Well my first impressions of the IMG run station... From the bits I heard I just felt they were trying to be a little too much like 5 Live with some of the presenting team they've brought in.

Carol Kirkwood appears to be double shifting on the BBC and L@W (Radio Wimbledon always used to have John Kettley) and I know Wimbledon is all about the tennis but RW filling any spare time they had with a bit of music made it unique so it wasn't constant waffle.

One thing I haven't noticed yet is whether L@W are doing news bulletins and local travel news like RW used to.

Also, overnight, RW always ran a highlights loop of the day's play... Nothing like that from L@W who just seem to be running their contact details on a loop tonight.

And finally... Purple And Green... the AELTC theme tune... appears to have been dumped in favour of some non-descript electric guitar tune... Bring back Purple And Green!!

Like you I am afraid I am a bit of an 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' person. I am not too keen on the new website either - its not very user friendly!

It looks like they have dropped the daily podcasts - which were always a useful record for those who missed the previous day or for those who were at work so missed the live tennis - plus as you say no 'Purple and Green'.

I have no problem with adding a video service - but not quite sure why it needed glamming up and changing the whole thing entirely. Its just not the same - it looks like they have just borrowed Sky and Eurosports presenting teams!

That'll be the next thing - the rights disappearing from the BBC and going to Eurosport!

I think the streams are too quiet.
