I can't see how anyone could read and have background music going on at the same time. Far too distracting.

My children used to study for uni exams with music playing in the room.

I don't know how they could do it, I certainly couldn't (and didn't).

I understand a desire for text-to-speech conversion for the Kindle, maybe for the sick or disabled, but audio books on the kindle strikes me as perverse. I think of my Kindle as a reading device.

Would a MP3-playing phone, an iPod or most other MP3 players not be a far better choice? They are smaller, tend to have more memory, are in your pocket already (most likely), ...

just sayin it's there ......

Overdrive:

in usa the kindle Overdrive library lending service is effectively an "extension" of the personal documents conversion service. not yet avialable in uk. note it is NOT model specific - works via the amazon servers - but some library books are specially restricted and will not load onto "pseudo kindle" kindle reader software on pc or mobile phone.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custom...deId=200747550

Overdrive IS available in UK - at those libraries that have it - but only in standard epub format!

There is a method of putting these books on a kindle, it is involved, and includes stripping off the drm protection before converting to mobi format using calibre. which i assume is illegal so am not giving link! But you could find it easily enough i expect .........

the k keyboard gives you:

1. ebooks. including text to speech.

2. wireless access to amazon books to purchase, and about two million free out of copyright books at project gutenberg and web archive texts. both have mobi format. just download either via wi fi (or 3g if u have that verison).

3. web browser. free 3g (on that version) or use wi fi almost anywhere in the world. no charges. limited, but works for newspaper browsing magazines blogs email social networking etc ...... not available on later kindle models.

4. basic but fine mp3 player. u can only jump 30s back or forward but thats ok.

5. bigger than mobile phone. which means screen is too. although no colour .....

the suggested method of converting overdrive uk epub library books into mobi format for kindle uses "standard methods" of stripping the drm from ebooks. well known and easily available online. not exactly secret. and quite easy. you could always do that, just destroy the unprotected book after reading, and not tell anyone ..... until such time as the kindle service appears in uk !

obviously there are many options !

for just cd audiobooks converted to mp3 all u need is an mp3 player.

phones and tablets give maximum flexibility. but not free 3G access. you pay extra for that. and for visual reading phones have tiny screens.

newer model kindles still allow free wireless download but not general web access. so you can only read newspapers via paid subscripton in kindle store. or the wikipedia current events page. newer kindles still allow wikipedia access.

I've got a Kindle Touch and have books and audio books (from audible) on it. I previously put the audio books on my ipod touch but it's handy to have them in the one place. Ok so you have to decide which format you're going to go for but it's nice having the choice and with audio books there's no funny "voice".

just to say ..... if u get k keyboard for the web browser then web pages should be "mobilised". use m google com, then selectwebsite mobile version, which u can bookmark to go straight to it next time.

or use kinstant. but the links there are out of date.

the desktop webpage can often be displayed but sometimes crashes the browser.

note that links on desktop webages often dont work as k keyboard does not have multiple windows. but on the moblised version they DO work !

mobilised sites give lower res pics. fine for most things but for example the doonesbury cartoon strip is unviewable. but then u just click goto desktop version at bottom of page ......

Does anyone know if there is any kind of hack job on the kindle to help move around an audio book?
The standard function only allows you to fast-forward 30 seconds at a time. I listed to audio book chapters on my kindle which are all 1 hr 15 mins long. I fall asleep listening to them so the next night I need to fast forward to where I fell asleep and it takes blummin ages! Not to mention there is a bug which means if you stop listening to an audio book but forget to press home it resets it to the start of the book again instead of remembering where you where - grrr

Anyone found a way around this?

i believe duokan has a better mp3 player. note that installing it probably invalidates any warranty.

official site: en duokan com .

various blogs and wikis etc have diy guides and instructions ......

..... havng just looked that up it seems duokan wil also read epub books directly.

i would NOT advocate installing duokan - for said warranty reasons - but it exists and has fans.

note it involves 1st jailbreaking the kindle. and some existing user functions dont work under duokan.

thanks for the advice - I think I will just put up with the rubbish kindle mp3 player - don't fancy jeopardising my kindle as I love it mainly as an ereader!
