I'm surprised by the lack of more recent songs on the list. I'm definitely glad to see more classics and less manufactured radio hits on there, but the singles market has been at its best for the past 4-5 years, hasn't it? I doubt singles in the 80's, 90's and early 00's could sell 6 million worldwide, like 'Poker Face, 'Moves Like Jagger' and 'Boom Boom Pow' did.

Are you kidding??, single sales were at their peak in the 80's, and to an extent the 90's

I can't be arsed to read the list properly but that sickly pile of shit that is Candle In The Wind being at number two seriously depresses the hell out of me. Vile song.

Bruno Mars is one of the best male artists and i cannot wait for his second album but how the hell did he get so high on the list in a space of 2 years?

No surprise at Kesha.. That song was the BOMB! in early 2010

I would think something of MJ would be somewhere there ... OH Well!

Not sure about worldwide, but in the UK song sales are at an all-time high at the moment (and still increasing).

I'd need a lot more evidence to back that up in all honesty, before I'd agree

I still love Tik Tok, such a great, infectious pop tune.

I'm more shocked Bruno Mars is ahead of her, that's a dreadful song!

Try a report from the BPI (British Phonographic Industry):

"The UK singles market went from strength to strength in 2011, with sales smashing all-time records for the fourth straight year in succession. Total singles sales increased 10.0% overall to 177.9m in 2011, with the vast majority (99.3%) sold as digital tracks and bundles. 1.1m CD singles were sold in 2011, representing just 0.6% of the total. All of the top 20 best-selling singles of 2011 sold more than 500,000 copies apiece."

http://www.bpi.co.uk/assets/files/mu...20strongly.pdf

And so far it's looking like 2012 will continue the trend.

OP where did you get that list from? Link please. Some seem far-fetched to say the least.

It would probably be a better measure of success to measure how much revenue a song made, adjusted for inflation.

I vaguely recall paying £1.76 for a 7" single in the 80s, which would be about £4 in today's money, but a digital download is only 99p, so even good sales in the current market is pretty crap revenue compared to equivalent sales 30 years ago.

So a bit like they do with the cinema. They always say that, Titanic for example took X amount making it the second highest grossing film. What you dont really hear is how many TICKETS it sold compared to, say, Avatar. So I see where you are coming from, though in fact I think they should actually do for the cinema what they do for records and just say how many tickets were sold. You cant compare how popular Gone with the wind was to Avatar on money taken.
BTW, I have 12" singles from 1981 that still have the £1.99 sticker on which using one web site. is £6.76 today And I never complained then like the tight arses today complain
Mind you we actually got something to keep then. How many downloads today will still be actually on music players/ipods etc in 30 years time?

Why does it seem far-fetched? lol

It's been like this for years. I think we broke the record for sales in 2008 or 2009, and then each year they still kept increasing. 2012 will probably break the record again. Sales were never this high in the 70's or 80's.

The media just doesn't report on this, because it's not what the older generations want to hear for the most part. But back in 2004/2005 time when sales were at an all time low, the media were updating everybody constantly each time we reached yet another new low. Yet now, things have turned around, and we're breaking records in the opposite direction, but the media have nothing to say about it.

Downloads being counted has now impacted all this biggest sellers charts pretty heavily.

What is also interesting is that during the early to mid 00s shops stopped selling CD singles but since late 2008 they slowly started to make a comeback. Because of this Rihanna's sales from that time in particular are alot lower than what they would have been. Same goes for Beyonce and Shakira.
