Honourable mention should also go to Dead Can Dance.

Lisa Gerrard's voice is extraordinary.

Can't believe that someone else here had heard of George. I always though Katie Noonan was phenomenal and can't understand why she was never bigger. She is still singing, has a new band called Katie Noonan and the Captains...

I'd actually say behind Americans the Australians have dominated in terms of acts within the top 40 even more or perhaps on par with the Irish.
Off the top of my head alone i can list Savage Garden,J Donovan,Kylie,Danni M,Holly Valance,Delta Goodrem,Jet,Temper Trap,AC/DC,Silverchair,Peter Andre plus many more going back to the 1950's when the charts started.

The Presets

Cut Copy

Midnight Juggernauts

Van She

Bag Raiders

Also, I wish Ministry of Sound Australia would release some of their compilations in the UK. Their Mashed series of albums was STUNNING. Any compilation that has Phoenix, Bowie and Friendly Fires as consecutive tracks literally CANNOT be bad.

Killing Heidi

Oh, and mustn't forget The Saints, who were the first band to release a punk single (yes, before The Damned's "New Rose").

Just downloaded The Cat Empire's 3rd album, Cities. It was a limited release when it came out and only 10,000 copies were produced. I kinda feel awful for downloading it through other means, after I spent weeks searching out a copy online, but it's a really good album so far, a good mix of their classic sound and some new stuff as well. Never thought I'd hear guitar riffs in a Cat Empire song, but it works. Now even more excited for seeing them live for the 3rd time in 4 years in December!

If you like blues and roots music, search for the Salty Dog Blues and Roots podcast, full of some of the best music on earth, much of it from Oz.

Great call for Powderfinger too...one of my favourite groups ever...

28 Days too...I had one of their CDs once...
