Thoughts on Johnny Depp

I liked Johnny Depp in the Ninth Gate,Secret Garden, Pirates of the Caribbean. I have friends who don't rate either his acting ability or his looks (I do) - what do you think?

I like Johnny as an actor & I think hes gorgeous......Ive been a fan for about 20 years and I will go and see a film on the strength of his name alone...

BUT- I think his strength lies in doing very camp, OTT, eccentirc & weird characters. When he does more "straight" things such as the lacklustre Secret Window he doesnt stand out so much.

also, in the recent Dark Shadows I got a feeling of "seen it all before", its not like he phoned in the performance, it was still full of energy, but I just felt it was retreading familiar ground.

He does the stuff he can do well, is he really challenging himself any more though??

I honestly think Cry Baby and Fear And Loathing... are his best work.

Burton is his safe word and safe world to play in. He's got lazy. Edward Scissorhands feels a lifetime ago.

I don't think he's as gorgeous as a lot of people say he is! Doesn't do it for me.

In terms of acting, he seems to play the "madcap/zany/quirky" role a lot. All of the characters meld into each other.

For me, I think he used to be better than he is now.

I think he's beginning to come across a bit samey in all his films. I have also noticed that he has to play an eccentric role to stand out in a way too.

I have also read that he would refuse to eat British food when he was in the UK and would only eat noodles. Considering he's American, I think that's a tad rich! I think he just latched on to the international 'bash the British food' bandwagon when people usually don't now much about what we actually eat or how international our diet is due to our heritage. I lost a lot of respect for him after this to be honest.

Anyway, I really liked him in Edward Scissor Hands and the Ninth Gate. Other films he has been in have been incredibly boring such as The Secret Window.

I found him handsome and well, pretty, at one time but he doesn't seem to do much for me now.

By far his best performance was as Rochester in 'The Libertine' - if you haven't seen it, do so.

Now.

Looks wise he doesnt do it for me but I think hes a good actor.

My favourite roles Ive seen him in are Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood and Fear and Lothing. I didnt bother seeing Dark Shadows as I just thought nah, same old.He can be good in more straight roles like public enemies but its the wacky ones hes more famous for.

i don't mind him, but think he needs to move on now from his eccentric character collaborations with Tim Burton and do some straighter roles to flex his acting chops. seems like a decent guy though, was impressed when he went to that kid's school dressed up in the Jack Sparrow gear, and if the rumours are true that he s thinking of a huge financial settlement for Vanessa Paradis, then that's to be commended I suppose.

He's a good actor, but I preferred him in his earlier roles. Edward Scissorhands was a terrific film, and he was fantastic in that (made me cry). Don Juan de Marco was another great film that he did.

Since the OP asked about Depp's looks, I'll throw my two cents in, and say that I thought he was a beautiful man when he was younger - exquisite really. Now...not so much. I don't think he's aged well to be honest.

My thoughts are quite simple. I was a huge fan of Johnny back in the 80's and 90's. And whilst he did some good stuff with Tim Burton early on the crap he is churning out over the last 12 years is pathetic. Not a fan of the Pirate films at all, in fact when I have tried to watch any of them I end up falling asleep as they bore me.

Johnny has basically turned his back on his own philosophy, he used to always say he was not interested in the money, or how big of a hit the films would be and that it was about telling an interesting and thoughtful story.. What he has become now is just a glorified whore doing what brings in the most money.

Unless you're 14 then I can't agree with you on this one.

His got years to catch up with DiCaprio, also got outclassed by DICaprio when he was 17 years old in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape.

I love Johnny Depp. I think he is a magical actor. There is no other actor out ther that cn act like Johnny Depp. He brings magic to the screen. His weird kooky roles makes him stand out from the rest, He is not afraid to be a weirdo.

Personally I think he's fantastic. An awesome actor and an all round great guy. A Nightmare on Elm Street seems likes such a long time ago.

Certainly one of the best actors to come out of Hollywood in the last 20 years. How many actors come to Great Ormond Street Hospital dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow to read stories to the kids there for hours on end and donate £1m as a way of saying thanks for helping his child recover from E. Coli poisoning. The guy is a class act.

He is an amazing actor. However i feel his films at the moment are really not that great. For me, he has not done a good film since Alice in Wonderland and even in that, his performance was questionable

Yeah I remember him doing that, and I had a great deal of respect for him because of it. He gave those kids an experience that they will never forget.

Thing is, I have yet to see Daniel Day Lewis in a film I actually like. He was bloody awful as Bill the Butcher. Ham is not the word.

For me Depp's best role was Joseph Pistone.
