I've just bought an old Philips HDRW720 DVD and Hard Drive Recorder off of eBay to get some recordings off of my Sky Box and onto DVD. It's a pain to use so far and to Freeview tuner but not too fussed as I only paid under £20 including postage

Anyway, the problem I have is the really poor image quality via Scart. You can see a faint ghosting of the image going across the screen from left to right. While it's still watchable, it's slightly annoying on my 37" Plasma (probably wouldn't be noticable on TV's of the day when the recorder was made)

Is it just a matter of changing the Scart cable, or is there something else I can do?

Sounds like you don't have a fully screened SCART cable. Some of the cheaper cables have individual wires for all the video and audio signals with a single overall screen. Trouble is signals in one wire can "leak" into adjacent wires causing various interference effects.

SCART is a two way lead so it is entirely possible that your lead is carrying a signal from your DVD to the TV and at the same time a signal from the TV back to the DVD. With a badly screened lead the signal from the TV back to the DVD can get onto the signal from DVD to TV giving just the effect you are seeing.

Decent leads use individually screened signal leads which greatly reduces this crosstalk (leaking) between signal wires. So it might be that using a fully screened lead could eliminate the problem. You can also get part wired leads that only have one direction wired which might also help.

Of course it is always possible the crosstalk is in the DVD machine. Which would be a bit harder to eliminate. In that instance a "one way" lead would help. As might changing the socket on the telly that you are using. Often only SCART 1 is wired for output from the TV as well as input. the other SCART(s) may be wired only for input. With no output signal on the SCART there is less chance of crosstalk occurring as they should be no interfering signal present.

Thanks for your help, switching around the Scart leads helped and now I have good quality recordings. The unit is still a real pig to use though, but I will live with it

Just buy a new tv. LG is a reliable brand with low expense. Go to the retail store and check it out.
