Despite reading superhero comics since I was 12, I've never
read a "Wonder Woman" comic. And there's a lot
of WW stuff out there. So I was wondering: what
should someone unfamiliar with Wonder Woman
start with?

When my missus got into WW, our comic shop manager recommended these, in this order;

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Earth-Wonder...0799600&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wonder-Woman...0799618&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gorgon-Wonde...0799627&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wonder-Woman...5&sr=8-1-spell
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wonder-Woman...0799676&sr=8-1

She started around the time Gail Simone took over the series and it was relaunched at number one, think that was in 2006/07 maybe...

We got the recent relaunch by Azzarrelo but stopped after 5 or 6 issues. Frankly we found it confusing and weak. We'd expected it to be awesome under Azzarello, too (I love his other work, 100 Bullets in particular). There's already a graphic novel out of the first arc, I think: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wonder-Woman...0799822&sr=8-1

Thanks for the list.

I was thinking of giving the Wonder Woman: the
Greatest Stories Ever Told a look as well, in order
to get a sense of the character's history-is
it any good?

Getting a feel for a superhero's history is a thankless task these days.

No probs...

All I can say about that book is that it's on our shelf which means it's been read and not gotten rid of so that must be a good sign

I've never read Wonder Woman to any great extent, but the immediate post-Crisis run in 1987 was one of my favourite comics of all time. George Perez did an outstanding job re-inventing the Amazon Princess.

Does it really matter since DC has crapped all over continuity?

I concur, a great run and great use of the Greek pantheon of gods.

I quite liked the issues running up to 100 of that series too with the contest and Artemis taking over (apart from the risible deodato art)

No. Zeus is now her father, and made of clay origin was just made up to cover the fact Hippolyta was at it with Zeus.

I actually really like the Azzarello run, people may not like the changes, but it's really well plotted, well drawn and it's one of few of the new 52 in which I'm interested in where it's going.
