Muse record Official London 2012 Song

It's been announced today that Muse have recorded the official London 2012 Olympics song 'Survival'.

It will get it's first play on Radio 1 tonight a 7.30pm.

From Muse Website

Quote:
We are very excited to announce that a Muse song, Survival, has been selected by the London Olympic committee to be the main official song for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Matt wrote the song with the Olympics in mind. It's about total conviction and pure determination to win.

The song will be played throughout the Games including when athletes enter the stadium, in the lead up to the medal ceremony and also as the theme for all international TV coverage. The worldwide radio exclusive will be tonight on BBC Radio 1 around 19:30 and will be available to buy on iTunes and in the muse.mu store immediately afterwards.

We are honoured that the Olympics have chosen our song to officially represent the London 2012 Olympic Games across the globe.

I don't mind Muse, great talent... I just hope it reaches out to a wider audience than just Muse fans though. Another Uprising/Starlight on the cards hopefully.

Two of their most commercial sounding songs. I don't think that's a good thing, I'd prefer something like Stockholm Syndrome or Citizen Erased. Something with balls.

I suppose it's all a matter of opinion, i'm not really one into the heavy rock kind of stuff... I need something abit catchy. Though releasing something for the Olympics is commercial in itself.

True. I imagine it will be a commercial sounding song and I understand why, but I prefer Muse when they are heavier.

I'm pleasantly surprised although I don't really know the band that well (sorry!) so I've written my two cents on my blog about the track.

Feel free to have a read.

Yes, we all love Proud by Heather Small... but she's a nobody compared to Muse now.

Just given this a listen, I don't think I'm impressed. It sounds like a bad imitation of Queen, with really lazy lyrics. Will give it a few more listens though because I do love Muse and don't like to slag off their work.

It sounds quite horrendous : an Olympic anthem is supposed to be something uplifting and inspiring, not a depressing grungey / rock opera type number.

Well, I certainly prefer this song a lot more than that awful Neutron Star Collision song they did for that Twilight film! I was so disappointed with their last album too, after loving everything else they'd done before that. Muse have been one of my favourite bands since early 1999 and I hated the fact that I only like about 3 songs on The Resistance. I hope I like their new album a lot more - I'd hate the thought of slowly going off one of my all-time favourite bands! Survival, for me, is hardly the best thing they've ever recorded but it's certainly more of a return to form, and I'm happy about that!

I was listening to Janice Long's show and one of her listeners thought the song belonged in a remake of Flash Gordon.

I agree with a lot of that, The Resistance was a bit of a disappointment for me. I hope they're heading in a direction I'm going to enjoy (Origin is my favourite album of theirs) but with the sound of this new song, I doubt that they are.

I'd never go off them as such, they've made far too many songs I love for that to happen. But I might have to accept that if I want to enjoy Muse I listen to the albums I've already got instead of getting excited for the new stuff.

I can see why. Given it more listens and it still hasn't grown on me. Bummer.

Oh yes, I didn't mean I'd ever go off their older stuff - I'll love that forever! I just meant that I'd have less interest in any their new stuff if they continued to record stuff like (most of) The Resistance and the Twilight song, which (for me personally) I haven't enjoyed very much at all. But I still have hope that they have a lot more moments of genius left in them, lol!

Btw, Origin is my favourite album too. Sheer brilliance, as are Absolution and Showbiz. Black Holes was a lot more commercial but still brilliant. I just found so much of The Resistance very weak by their usual standards, except for the brilliant Exogenesis Symphony and Uprising.

You've pretty much just summed up my thoughts on Muse and their albums. And the less said about Twilight the better.

Just heard the Olympic song being played on Radio 5 Live.
What a dreadful, tuneless, pathetic dirge it is! Nothing uplifting about it at all.
I have heard better sounds coming from my digestive tract!

It's an... odd choice. I think I'll wait until I hear the full song later.

Scrap my last comment, I've just heard it in full. It's hilarious, a Queen pastiche (and I love Queen)!

Were you listening to the same song I have heard it 3 times now and LOVE it. It will fit the bill perfectly. So what if it sounds a bit like Queen at their best. It will make a pleasent change when it charts. Imagine you are an athlete coming into, say, the cycle velodrome and this is pumping out You wont need to feel more motivated. SUPERB
And did I see someone praising Heather Small That is Heart FM stuff......best left WELL alone
