Always wondered this, but can't make any real sense out of it

I don't think that anyone really knows. Here is Freddie Mercury's take on it:

It's one of those songs which has such a fantasy feel about it. I think people should just listen to it, think about it, and then make up their own minds as to what it says to them... "Bohemian Rhapsody" didn't just come out of thin air. I did a bit of research although it was tongue-in-cheek and mock opera. Why not?

Brian May's answer to that question:

He recalls "Freddie was a very complex person: flippant and funny on the surface, but he concealed insecurities and problems in squaring up his life with his childhood. He never explained the lyrics, but I think he put a lot of himself into that song."[16] May, though, says the band had agreed that the core of a lyric was a private issue for the composer

Roger Taylor's answer to that question:

fairly self-explanatory with just a bit of nonsense in the middle

Nobody really knows...

I thought it was about Freddie's childhood in parts (as the lyrics can attest). Other bits are fantasy nightmarish.

It's about Freddie Mercury just being a complete genius! Only he could come up with something as wild and wondeful like that at the time!

In all the interviews I've seen with Brian and Roger over the years they seem say that they haven't a clue what it was on about but it worked!

It's all about Freddie sparing his life from his pork sausages.

I thought Freddie was partial to a bit of pork sausage?

I always thought it was about depression, mainly due to the closing lines.

& now thanks to you lot I'll be thinking pork sausages whenever I hear that song

Scaramouche once asked me to do the fandago with him. I told him that I was straight and not-so-politely declined. I also suggested that he go to Specsavers if he wanted his vision to be more than little silhouettos ....!

I do think though, that a little few-second snippet of the song ought to be used by the BBC weather bods when they're doing the forecast and it's a rotten time ahead:

thunderbolt'n'lightning very very frightening

doncha think so too?

Indeed he was but he didn't handle them with care which is why for the last 20 years we've had Queen performing in name only - it's like Taggart continuing without Taggart. At least John Deacon had the decency not to take part in the charade that Queen is the same band it always was.
