Three or any I suppose...question....
If say I upgraded and got Myself an I-Pad, obviously I still get to keep my original phone.
Would they supply a sim/s card with the same phone number to use in both aplliances? Ie 2 cards with same number? |

Nope, impossible for consumers.
Well it can be done but not without being a business customer with a legal solution like vodafone one call, or cloning your sim card which is illegal. Just out of curiosity, why would you want a same number sim card for your ipad.... you can't exactly make calls from it... |

The iPad is unable to make or receive both calls and text messages.
The "iMessage" feature works by sending data over the internet. So, as above, I don't see why you'd want to have the "same number" on both devices. |

As mentioned the iPads SIM is used for data only so it doesn't have a number.

It's something that networks in other countries offer, Germany, the Netherlands and so on, with the ability to manage which SIMs receive which services by way of their serial numbers (that way you can ensure calls aren't routed to a SIM in a tablet, for example). It's just another one of those instances when the UK networks are being perverse IMO. |

The way the European networks operate, all the services can be shared/split between the SIMs and it's not just for sharing between a phone and a tablet, they can be shared between multiple phones - therefore all the SIMs need the same number for calling and texting purposes. Not to mention, I'm pretty certain it's not limited to 2 SIMs - I believe you can pretty much add as many SIMs as you like for a pre-set additional monthly fee for each extra SIM. |

All data SIMs on all networks have phone numbers.
A data SIM is just a normal SIM set up on a data-only tariff, when it's first produced there isn't necessarily any way of knowing what it'll eventually be used for. If memory serves, in Carphone Warehouse, the SIMs used for O2 contract modems are the same as the SIMs used for O2 contract phones, they just get connected on a different tariff. That and the networks' billing and account management systems will revolve heavily round phone numbers, so it's easier just to keep doing things the same way than have to worry about a different way for customer's to identify their account. Not to mention, a lot of USB modems can send and receive texts. |
