You must be aware by now that Robbie overpredicts for ITV shows and underpredicts for BBC shows.

I would have thought, beforehand, 5m at best for Superstar. I feel that would have been ITV's desired target. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have wanted it to drop below 4m.

A target of only 5m for "the major pre-Olympic programming event" ( (c) GeorgeS ) ??

Based on ratings for previous ALW shows and based on the fact it's summer then yes. 5m, in this multichannel age when viewers have so much choice, is a good overnight audience for ITV1.

A 300,000 increase on last week. I wonder if this is a knock-on effect of the real-life Olympic cock-ups cos, from my point of view, these real-life mishaps make Twenty Twelve seem even funnier than before.

With no 'major' shake ups to X Factor I think best that can be hoped for is a 9/10 million launch and then to grow from there on in. I actually found the boredom set in around the later auditions for me; Kitty made the lives 'manageable' but overall the show wasn't just 'poor' it was a mess.

Will X Factor be hit by the 'over saturation'? Possibly, but BGT did rather well; and The Voice did do some amazing figures and had a half decent finale rating.

I don't think any of these shows are comparable to Superstar which just seems so terribly planned, scheduled and put together.
X Factor's problems are its own internal problems.

I did laugh last night when one of the characters said:
"We've had a bad enough week as it is!" and then the entire episode was about forgetting to plan something
Lacks The Thick of Its cynicism though; they'd have had a security cock up before the real one was revealed

Its ratings are getting a real boost from Line of Duty and just 2012 being so close.
Line of Duty is an amazing rating btw; when was the last time a BBC Two drama didn't just launch well, but grew on its launch?

Superstar being a total flop is probably good news for X Factor - the last thing they needed was the audience coming off four or five months of near constant Saturday night singing contests before the August premiere. Fortunately nobody even showed up for the start of Superstar.

The X Factor is bound to be down anyway - ratings were tailing off hugely at the end of last series, talent shows have had a difficult 2012 so far and the US precedent isn't good. They've gone for the cheap option for the replacement judge and kept Barlow so there's not going to be a great start. Tbh I think the US version has had far more press with Britney joining.

No change - 11.3m (inc +1)
Down 5% - 10.7m
Down 10% - 10.2m
Down 15% - 9.6m
Down 20% - 9.0m

Even a 20% drop leaves X Factor as a massive ratings hit (but wouldn't stop it getting a kicking from the press and this thread)

Incidentally, applications to apply to audition for series 2 of The Voice UK close July 28th. Anybody work out from that when series 2 is likely to air? January?

What is often lacking with much of light entertainment on both ITV/BBC in recent years is any sense of irony.

It was always a major undercurrent of past British entertainment programming, the sense of a total mickey take of the whole thing.

These modern formats are taking themselves far too seriously. It's off-putting, they are as deadly serious as the US are. The Voice being a good example. X-Factor has also gone in this direction.

Patently not true as any regular reader of this thread would (or should...) know.

I have often been well out on my BBC predictions - eg, a certain 20m peak for the Murray Wimbledon final, or my confident 25m BBC peak for the Royal Wedding. ITV has often easily outperformed my so-called overpredictions. And I have been consistently saying for years that the Opening Ceremony will be a nailed-on 20m+ peak but now I am getting cold feet on that one and think I will be proved way too optimistic on that.

Of course, the more times people say "Robbie underpredicts etc" the more people believe it to be true.

Gits...

You can't possibly have believed that Superstar would have premiered with 7m, not based on the most recent ALW shows.

You might have been right with your 20m prediction for Andy Murray if the final had gone to a fifth set.

The Olympics OC could still peak at 20m, cos people may tune in just to make sure the stadium doesn't fall down. And in next week's Twenty Twelve there are concerns that the firework display will set off the ground-to-air missiles, so that's a possibility as well. (Although I'm sure everything will be just fine.)

the more I hear of this opening ceremony the more I wonder what kind of drugs were used when it was created.

No, the ground to air missiles being set off by fireworks is just fiction. Danny has stuck boringly to pigs and sheep in the stadium, factory chimneys and magical rainclouds.

I'm hoping the Opening Ceremony is a cross between Teletubbies and Pets Win Prizes.

Two of my all time favourite shows....

I was talking about the real opening ceremony, not the fictional one.

So let's have a run-down of the most watched programmes in the UK this year, with the peaks and shares. I believe it is in this order (and there are probably more than this):

Euro 2012 - England vs Italy
Euro 2012 final
Jubilee Concert
Wimbledon
Euro 2012 - England vs Sweden
Britain's Got Talent final

Also, I've been looking for ratings for the following programmes:

The first episode of Russell Howard's Good News which aired on 22 October 2009

The documentary on BBC Three called 'My Forced Unwanted Wedding' which aired on 19 September 2011

The documentary on ITV2 called 'One Direction: A Year in the Making' which aired on 23 November 2011

It should start really well, at least. I dread to think what sort of awful Saturday night schedule BBC One will have in the middle of August. BBC One's Saturday nights will probably come gradually back to life, one slot at a time, between the end of August and the beginning of October.

Did you quote yourself?? I do that also... BBC1 will win 9pm by 0.5m+, Superstar will scrape second. 24 hrs in A&E will break 2m viewers and come third.

Has the BBC2 Riot programme been given the green light tonight?

Quote:
“9pm - 9:59pm BBC2 Repeat Operation Mincemeat”

It'll be towards the end of August, probably around the same time as Doctor Who? But the competition will probably be the same as it usually is - mainly the weather but also some lottery quiz show on BBC1.

I think the problem is more likely to be that even if this series is better, they'll start off lower and face an uphill battle. They lost a lot of viewers at the end of last series. And I'm not sure there's really anything to lure them back.

I think they plan to air the final series of Total Wipeout (sat on the shelf since Jan 2011) after the Olympics, which will fill early peak I'd have thought until Strictly begins. Doctor Who will likely begin the 25th, but I wouldn't rule out the 18th.

Superstar have now tried to fix their back to front format by running: Results, Sing-off, Performances, then Elimination. So the two that came bottom in the vote from last night have just done a sing-off (without a result) and now return to the competition to sing again in the next round, after which one will be eliminated before the public can vote on said round.

Well that should resolve everything...

The format is clearly a mess...

I thought Superstar might have done OK, but it seems to be dying. 2.37 million isn't good enough. Even the much maligned Popstar to Operastar managed to hold up around the 2.8 million mark.
Why doesn't ITV1 just go for the cheaper option of old drama repeats and films as nothing their LE department does until TXF seems to rate above 3 million?
