Terrible for The Bachelor considering the massive publicity. BB seems low but is that an expected ch5 figure now?

Looks like the tennis justified it's slot - even if it was over quickly. Don't think ratings were the real motivation last night, though - they obviously didn't want to pull the Simon Schama documentary, given that it was presumably timed to coincide with the launch of the big Hollow Crown Shakespeare adaptations tonight. We tend to be so focussed on BBC One on this thread, that we often don't spot when something is done for the benefit of the BBC Two schedulers.
Poor start for The Batchelor's second series. Thinking back, Gavin Henson was an inspired bit of casting for the first year - good-looking, well-known name, straight off Strictly, and very well-documented love life. Always going to struggle to match that. Bad news for C5 if it turns out that he was the hook, not the format. |

A dip for The Bachelor, with hindsight it was expected. Spencer doesn't have the 'fame'of Gavin Henson - coincidentally Charlotte Church was on Graham Norton at the same time on BBC1, maybe that rated quite well.
Steady for BB, it is getting a lot of discussion here for a show that seems to hover around 1.2m-1.4m every night. Will The Circus have been dented by Wimbledon on BBC1?? |

Couldn't the tennis have been relegated to BBC3 or 4 I was waiting for New Tricks.

Source: Dancc, DS Probably the right decision to move the Tennis then, I think it only dented BBC Two by ~0.5m in all reality. New Tricks repeat probably would have done ~3.5m. The Circus would have got under 3m irrespective of opposition. |

It's the highest BB rating in 14 days, so quite impressive compared to the last 2 weeks.

BBC Two
17:50 - Wimbledon 2012: 2.63m (13.7%) 21:00 - Simon Sharma's Shakespeare: 720k (3.4%) 22:00 - Episodes: 661k (3.4%) Wow I don't think there's much hope for a 3rd season of Episodes! I thought it was doing bad when it went as low as 1 million, but now...? Also It only did "ok" for Showtime last year, but was paired with the much stronger Shameless US, but this year it's paired with Weeds....and Weeds hasn't done all too well the last few years |

If that's the highest rating BB in two weeks I don't get why you're here constantly trying to defend the show - even Dancc seems to have realised that's a losing battle!
People can slate the show but it's doing better than last year, so that's a bonus. It's not going to get Ch4 type numbers anymore. Ch5 is a lesser channel. Just like how much Neighbours lost when it moved from BBC1 to Ch5. |

Interesting Hollyoaks first look on E4 nearly getting more viewers then on C4. Guess it was a massive storyline

There are millions of viewers who are not interested in tennis, live or dead, and perhaps had not seen the scheduled episode of the drama the first time round. Why is it assumed viewers will automatically go for a live sporting event ?
For any scheduler, that's a no brainer. Looking at the soap ratings, there could be an argument that Federer could have gone to BBC One at 20:00, bumping EastEnders to BBC Two, because it's pretty clear that the Tennis dented the soaps heavily. Obviously I don't know the Tennis breakdown, but assuming there were ~3.5m watching BBC Two at 8pm and ~6.7m watching BBC One at 8pm, doing a switch-a-roo could get you ~5.5m each on both channels. |

Yes I suppose we'll have to start getting used to EE on BBC2 next month. Is there anywhere in the UK that can't receive BBC2 but can BBC1 ?

All very underwhelming numbers last night except the tennis that did well. The soaps were all hit quite hard, and posted some low numbers. June has been a very bad month for all the soaps really, for obvious and expected reasons. Hollyoaks' E4 episode was the only bright spot. The Bachelor did very badly and the BB lead-in did nothing much for it. Not that surprising really - its target audience can't very broad.

what did it get at the start last year?

About 1.1m-1.2m I think. It did tend to grow from there.
ep 1, 19/08/11: 1.33m (7.8%) [=>1.43m] 7th, +100k ep 2, 26/08/11: 1.26m (?%*) [=>1.38m ] 13th, +120k ep 3, 02/09/11: 1.10m (6.1%) [=>1.31m] 12th, +210k (no episode on 09/09/11 due to BB12 live launch) ep 4, 16/09/11: 1.13m (6.2%) [=>1.25m] 15th, +120k ep 5, 23/09/11: 1.09m (6.0%) [=>1.26m] 14th, +170k ep 6, 30/09/11: 1.09m (6.0%) [=>1.24m] 13th, +150k ep 7, 07/10/11: 1.17m (6.4%) [=>1.31m] 11th, +140k ep 8, 14/10/11: 1.17m (6.5%) [=>1.36m] 11th, +190k ep 9, 21/10/11: 1.29m (6.9%) [=>1.50m] 12th, +210k ep 10, 28/10/11: 1.34m (7.0%) [=>1.60m] 8th, +260k Every episode aired at 2200. *DS reported a 10.1% share which was an error. The Bachelor was a remarkably consistent performer, trading in the 6-7% range for pretty much its whole run. Even a missed week didn't hurt it. Quote:

Good grief, the soaps drew in a set of awful ratings and shares. I assume Wimbledon on BBC Two dented all of them with Federer on the ropes but then again the E4 first look of Hollyoaks nearly beat the Channel 4 episode. There's no point writing off The Bachelor yet though to lose 0.6m on the lead in is slightly concerning considering the lack of opposition from the other main channels. Ice Road Truckers did very well, though, as did Big Brother - the +1 figure is starting to build for the show now.

Maybe The Batchelor is a wake up call to Channel 5 not to try and outdo ITV2 in rubbish programming. Channel 5 really needs to do better as it does a lot of the time.
