NBC messed around with the Sydney Olympics and time-delayed it so much results were appearing in newspapers before they were shown on NBC
With the exception of the ceremonies NBC will be screening every event live this year - either on NBC, cable or everything is online.

It's a major shift for them and they see it as a big risk. Personally I think it will actually boost primetime ratings.

A shame, Penn and Teller: Fools Us was a great show, it just failed to find an audience for some reason.
I won't miss The Magicians but Penn & Teller: Fool Us was a great show. Sometimes I want to slap the UK television viewing public so hard! You should have watched Penn & Teller you muppets!!

Shouldn't have spent all that money on those studios for the Olympics then.
ITV could save 100% of the cost of Daybreak by axing it.

Could they really? When they have people on contracts?

1.5% is nw being dressed up as drastic cuts eh? They still have 98.5% of their budgets intact.

And replace it with what though?

The BBC magic show was pants, but I thought the Penn & Teller one had potential.
For everyone saying that magic is underused on television, there must have been more magic shows launched in the last decade than virtually every other genre of light entertainment, C4 in particular have done dozens of them (Dirty Tricks, The Magic Of Jesus, all that), and not one of them has caught on. Also it doesn't help there's only about half a dozen magicians, no doubt Barry and Stuart will be on the new C4 show like they're on all the other ones.

Only 1.08m excluding +1 for BB. Ouch. I know it faced penalties but still! +1 couldn't have added much.
This sounds a bit grumpy but I honestly can't see much difference in the Big Brother ratings to the extent they require particularly extensive study. If they can get over a million on a night opposite a football match peaking at over thirteen million, I would see that for a success, and I would suggest that if it keeps on getting over a million, C5 will be perfectly happy because their normal schedules don't always guarantee seven figure ratings every night.

The Big Brother ratings are, I feel, particularly consistent, to the extent that some of this discussion seems a bit pointless. I don't think 1.28m to 1.08m is that much of a crisis, especially in the context of that channel on that night during the Euros. The fact it's still getting over a million is the big thing, it almost certainly beat BBC2 so that's one bonus.

Why are none of the semi's being shown on ITV?
Congratulations for being the millionth person to ask that on Digital Spy! Only joking. I don't suppose ITV will do this again, it's made them look a bit silly. But lest we forget, they certainly could have shown one.

Is it me (probably!) but I cant understand how BBC2 can have such a bad share in the middle of Wimbledon fortnight?

I saw that. Perhaps it only picks up in the second week? I don't know anyone who watches the first week, unless there is a British interest.

No but there is a commercial requirement to make money.

ITV still have the number one commercial television show in the morning. That is by no means a small thing. They soak up that ad market.

I don't think I ever saw Fool Us, but I probably saw the last five or ten minutes of every edition of The Magicians, and the second series seemed a little disorganised, so I wasn't surprised by the drop in ratings. And, I think Fool Us rated even lower.

I know it was a different TV environment, but, at its ratings peak, The Paul Daniels Magic Show ran for 40 to 45 minutes per edition, so perhaps 1hr 20 mins isn't the best running time. Too many entertainment shows are dragged out to fill as much time as possible now.

From my (admittedly little) viewing of Daybreak there doesn't seem to be a lot of advertising, particularly in the 6-7 am hour.

Just a note, BBC Press Office has updated today with provisional's for the 14th to 20th July.

Which means that next Thursday's update will be for the 21st to 27th July. In particular, timings and/or descriptions for:

- Wednesday 25th July (women's football - vs New Zealand, 16:00, Cardiff)
- Thursday 26th July (men's football - vs Senegal, 20:00, Manchester)
- Friday 27th July (opening ceremony)

Obviously we have gone over scheduling multiple times here so I won't repeat myself, but next Thursday (and Friday when DigiGuide updates) is when we get the first real idea of what is happening and when and what time the actual live festivities start on BBC One and who with.

As regards the men's football, an interesting one. Given the news today about Beckham, I can't help but think they will do a u-turn and Beckham's only said that (with Pearce's permission?) to drum up interest after the Euro 2012 exit. In any event I can see both games being on BBC One.

Also, in unrelated news, Outnumbered is back at Christmas and also for Series 5 next year.

Allow me to show the BARB data for Wimbledon 2011 on BBC2. It began a week earlier last year. Week 2 is under the Spoiler tab to save space here. The teatime ratings in Week 1 were impressive. Murray is currently live on BBC1, will he get moved to BBC2, if so the ratings in the morning will be impressive.

w/e 26th June 2011

Week 1 (2012 equivalent day in brackets)
4 WIMBLEDON 2011 (MON 1800) 3.33m (1.17m)
8 WIMBLEDON 2011 (WED 1750) 2.73m (1.4m)
10 WIMBLEDON 2011 (SAT 1728) 2.64m
11 WIMBLEDON 2011 (FRI 1800) 2.23m
12 WIMBLEDON 2011 (THU 1750) 2.22m
14 TODAY AT WIMBLEDON (SAT 2014) 1.89m
15 TODAY AT WIMBLEDON (WED 2018) 1.85m (906k)
21 TODAY AT WIMBLEDON (TUE 2001) 1.39m
23 WIMBLEDON 2011 (SAT 1200) 1.34m
25 WIMBLEDON 2011 (TUE 1751) 1.30m (2.56m)
Spoiler

There is only one pick which could be considered questionable and that is ITV not having tonight's semi final.

Everything else has panned out as expected, and as previous years.

I think that BBC has actually been quite fortunate with the last two games. They may not have been the most exciting matches by all accounts, but going to penalties helps to skew the figures.

Spain's win over Portugal bought the most watched tv viewing peak ever in Spain last night, 18.1m viewers.

I doubt it - the 3 over age players have actually been named as Richards, Giggs and Bellamy.

Unless one of them gets injured I can't see how they could change that.

BBC 3 has a seperate studio beside BBC ONE, I believe their studio will be open fronted unlike BBC One's.

Luckily the BBC and NBC have been alllowed create their own studios throughout the park because from the photos I have seen the temporary block being used by the International rights holders has a terrible view.
Although from what I've seen of previous games apart from NBC and the BBC most broadcasters don't (or can't) opt for a real view anyway.

IMO the 1st series of The Magicians with Lenny Henry was better. The 2nd series suffered from being shown at odd times if I remember rightly. And yes, it was too long at 1hr 20 mins (enjoyable, but a bit of a slog for this viewer).

As for Fool Us - thought it was fine, but obviously a full series didn't go down as well as the pilot. Perhaps ITV will only screen it as a one off special in the future.

Looks like ITV is definitely back in "money to burn" good times then, as opposed to the "cap in hand" near-bankrupt organisation of just a few years back.

Seems a big effort to go to for an event your big rivals are covering exclusively and you can only talk about, and look on from the outside?
ITV will be able to show all the big moments from the Olympics, as normal within the context of news bulletins, hence what these studios are for.

I expect ITN have organised them, as the production company, particularly as one is for ITN's international services.
