The first pickups of the 2012/13 US TV season have been announced. Elementary (CBS), Vegas (CBS), The Following (Fox) and Arrow (CW) have all been picked up by Sky.

I personally don't fancy Elementary's chances especially here in the UK, but the others have potential, especially The Following.

Wonder how much Blackout dropped over the hour?

I thought it was one of the most ridiculous dramas I have seen I'm years, utter bilge from start to finish.

Then again, I don't watch much drama on ITV....

It did better than I expected anyway, I thought sub 3m.

By the way, how fantastic to see a bona fide 20m BARB reported audience in the top 30s after all these years.

DMN - come on, play ball, that's how the networks and the reporting agency have chosen to report the figures, your Top 30 of the year looks pretty silly if you take it upon yourself to aggregate the whole thing into one 4 hour telecast.

I'm glad the figures are slowly picking up and hope that they continue upwards - the current SL is brilliant!

No, the argument is that ad breaks are hardly the greatest turn-off imaginable, especially these days when there are far more channels with ad breaks and with PVRs they are surely of far less concern for a viewer. In addition, the Royal Wedding and Jubilee coverage on ITV - which was a straight simulcast of the BBC - didn't have adverts and still had a lower audience.

That was also one of many arguments in that post, including the ones about the papers slagging the Corporation off, and ITV having the ability to take out advertising on other commercial media.

It's about two rowers at the 1948 London Olympics and clips are available on the BBC web site, do a search.Looks like it's scheduled for the Wednesday.

Having struggled to stay awake through what turned into an extended pop promo with a good cast, I too am curious as to how many people switched off/over across the hour.

I do not understand why the company that makes Scott & Bailey - however unremarkable it may be, it knows it's on a mainstream channel - can deliver something that belongs on BBC Two, or even BBC Three, to BBC One.

Why did nobody from the BBC keep an eye on what Red Productions were doing? Or did they think it was marvellous and have no idea of what a BBC One drama should be like?

Utterly bizarre that Blackout should play on BBC One while the far more mainstream (and superior in every way) Line Of Duty goes out on BBC Two ...

Having said that, I'd rather watch Blackout over most ITV dramas ...

I think it's ridiculous to suggest BBC beats ITV on football simulcasts because of people's preference for BBC's commentators / presenters.

If this was the reason, why has the phenomenon continued over an incredibly long time during which here have been numerous personnel changes on both sides?

It's hard to say ITV's personnel are significantly worse given most of them have come from the BBC.

Mowbray is ex ITV. Tyldesley is ex BBC. If they swapped back again does anyone seriouslly think it would affect the viewing figures? Of course it wouldn't.

Chiles is ex BBC. Suppose, hypothetically, Lineker went to BT and Chiles returned to be BBC's main presenter. Would BBC suddenly do worse vs ITV than it did on Sunday? Of course not.

So if it's not specific presenters / commentators, what is it?

The answer has to be that it is the BBC's overall reputation (across all genres, not just football and not just sport either - ie news quality is absolutely key to reputation), as a higher quality broadcaster with better production values, higher standards etc etc. Plus no adverts. And all of these factors combining with its status as the National broadcaster (and in turn reinforcing that status - ie it's a virtuous circle).

There are other ways of describing some of the above - they all come together to give the BBC a far stronger brand than any other broadcaster. Which means people are more likely to think of watching the BBC first before considering other alternatives - so if both alternatives are equally attractive they are more likely to go BBC (which is why what people on here call a filler will do better on BBC1 than ITV1 in the same slot).

I understood the BBC rules required a BBC producer to be present throughout the filming/recording of any independent commission.

The problem is, are we reporting programmes, or 'moments'?

For the moment I'll keep it as it is, because BARB will probably report programme averages for the Olympics. If they don't, then we'll see what happens.

I know this is probably well known, so apologies for stating the obvious, but it's the broadcaster that decides what gets reported in terms of average audience, not BARB. If the BBC want to report actual Olympic events, they are free to do so, if they want to report it all together, its their choice, BARB just process what they are sent in the broadcaster logs.

Quote:
“But what generated almost no coverage was the disclosure that we won't have a formal daily highlights programme for the London Olympics in the way that we have done for previous Games.

The reason it didn't make headlines, I'd like to think, is that the case is a rational one: the scheduling makes it difficult, and viewing habits have changed.

But I know a previous blog on this subject a couple of years back received some mixed reaction, so let me spin through the argument in a bit more detail.

First, the live action from the London Games will continue until almost midnight.

Not all of it will be front-rank sport, but we want the ability to take you to the continuing live events whether it's basketball or beach volleyball or boxing.

In which case it's impossible to schedule highlights on BBC One until midnight - and if you were waiting for a particular sport it might not take to the air until close to 1am.

This is a different case from Athens, the last time the Games were in a European time-zone, where the two-hour difference meant the action finished early enough to allow for a highlights show.

But second, the thinning out of the sport schedule as the day winds down does allow for the programme that will come on air at 10.40pm - hosted by Gabby Logan - to combine the live sport that remains with some of the biggest moments of the day that's passed.

In particular, we expect to get many of the medal-winners into the studio for this programme; so we'd hope to celebrate their achievements and watch their performances with them, interspersed by updates on the action that's continuing.

This mixed approach makes more editorial sense than that programme being either live only or highlights only.

The third big factor in our thinking is that there's now a multitude of ways to catch highlights without there being a dedicated show.

There's the sport website, which will include the ability to rewind and review any session; there's the iPlayer; and there will be headlines including clips of the best bits across our BBC One and BBC Three schedule, including the news bulletins.

And the evidence of other sport events is that audiences for highlights have dwindled massively, precisely because there are so many other ways to see what you want.

But even then we're making sure we do cater for people who want a digest of each day's Olympics with a high story count and all the relevant information.

There will be special editions of Sportsday on the BBC News Channel at 6.30pm, 10.30pm and 0.15am - with the latter also broadcast on BBC One - so you can catch anything you may have missed. If there's something you want to see at greater length, the choice will be yours via all our catch-up services.

Additionally, as we announced a few months back, there will be a 3D highlights programme - a chance to see the day through a different pair of lenses - scheduled on the BBC HD channel around 11pm each night.

As a statement of the obvious, this will only include sport that was filmed in 3D for the world feed; so it won't include some non-3D sports like rowing and sailing.

Finally we will, of course, also be reviewing the Games at the end of the 17 days.

The ultimate highlights programme is likely to run in the hour or so before the Closing Ceremony and that will be the polished, considered view of the whole of London 2012 in the same style as our much-appreciated review of Beijing in 2008.

The aim overall: that you need never miss a moment, and that we'll help you find anything you want to view live and then again at the time of your choice.”

I don't think there is anything new in there, but thought I would post.

if ITV1HD isn't included, why isn't the 3m viewers include for multichannel chart?

Elementary should do well on the curiosity factor, The Following seems an odd fit for Atlantic, should be on Sky.

Wonder which comedies which will picked up, I reckon The Mindy Project would be a good fit for E4.

Blackout losing 0.78m over the hour, it will timeshift of course to 5m+ A shame that Real Chariots of Fire rated so poorly, modern viewers appear not to be interested in historic sporting feats.

Decent enough for 7/7 documentary on BBC2 & Secret Millionaire on C4, BB staying steady. Quite a varied output at 9:00pm last night.

It's a brand thing i think.

The MOTD team has been stable for years, wheras ITV keeps changing it's presentation team.

Not really. The BBC have introduced quite a lot of new co-com's which is after all the majority of the broadcast.

Its the ad breaks. When ITV go head to head with Sky Sports they do well. But despite the tournament games being specifically built around the ad break timings (the long gap between anthems & KO where nothing at all happens, etc), the BBC give the illusion of providing more content by not having to taken ads.
