I didn't say 'good', I said 'solid'. Which is exactly what it is. Consistent week-on-week, above 3m in the 20:00 slot, sending Holby City under 5m for the second week in a row will please ITV.

I was going to say not a bad night but apparently 12m is the new basis for comparison so maybe not! In which case, rough night for the soaps, down about 10m decade-on-decade.

Ramsay seems to be doing well on Channel 4 for the first time in ages although Embarrassing Bodies first run didn't do great (+1 brings it up to a more reasonable number, I guess). Not the most obvious scheduling progression I've ever seen from Channel 5 but it still pulled in some very good numbers for them. I doubt many of the prison show viewers were still there by the time BB came on!

More great numbers for ITV's digital channels. After being the poor relation to ITV2/ITV3 for a while, it seems like ITV4 is taking big strides forward and is able to bring in an audience for its sports coverage.

I think Emmerdale running to 8pm helps the rest of the schedule. I'm sure the "flopzone" has got a lot worse since it moved out of the 7.30pm slot. So it's not quite as bad as it seems if you just look at Emmerdale. They're probably adding viewers from 8pm.

its certainly possible, but its like asking your home run leader to bunt, to move the runner from 2nd to 3rd base.

Actually, MOTD always out performs Sky Sports football.

Just depends how you define the "market leader".

I was talking about the BRAND, not the commentators.

ITV tend have a massive chopping and changing of styles and presenters for major tournaments.

Quote from Media Guardian article about new DG:

"Patten has made clear that he wants a BBC that is unafraid of seriousness and culture and unconcerned with matching the ratings of commercial channels. Everything in Entwistle's record suggests that he was the candidate best positioned to attempt to deliver this vision. The presence in the current schedules of The Hollow Crown – an ambitious Shakespeare quartet – may have been useful during interviews."

Maybe because everyone can watch MOTD and it's a national institution.

Excellent for Line of Duty, shaping up to be one of the tv highlights of 2012.

Unenthused by Entwistle's appointment, perhaps the best of a bad bunch. They should have brought Dyke back after the previous lilly-livered Trust sacked him. I reckon George will be a Patten yes-man, and that scares me. It'll be more Shakespeare, less sport.

Finally, terribly sad to hear of Eric Sykes's passing. A true legend of British comedy and a hero of mine. I hope both BBC1 and ITV1 will tribute him accordingly, and ITV could do no better than a prime time re-showing of The Plank.

It's taken a long while to become a national institution, something that ITV sport would do well to remember, rather than chopping and changing all the time.

I dont think Andy Murray will ever have a better chance of reaching the Wimbledon final than this year. With Nadal out, the potential semi final draw looks winnable for him. He needs to beat Ferrer in the game right now to reach that semi final and hopefully then setting up a massive BBC1 final on Sunday. Andy Murray is a well known choker of big matches but let's hope the Brit can pull through these next two matches.

I really don't understand the appeal of something like Match of The Day. All the sports fans seem to insist on getting their fix live, but apparently will happily sit down 7 hours after the games, to hopefully catch 3 or 4 minutes of some football games
And then I read that these limited rights cost £180M

You get highlights of all the games and it's in at a good time.

You never really miss anything important.

It's very good if you want an overview of the whole league.

Well he's gone one set down already against Ferrer. It's going to be a four-setter at the very least and may cause problems with the BBC1 newshour at 6pm.

Interesting night last night with not much more than 1 million separating all 5 main channels in the key 9pm slot. Very rare that.

Holby City damaged by a weak EE lead in, Emmerdale deserved the win.

I love the idea of The Guardian and the Daily Mirror being neutral. The former's media section (such as it is) is full of little digs at the BBC, and the Mirror often has screaming headlines criticising the BBC.

I remember the days when there was general tutting on this thread when Coronation St and/or EastEnders fell under 40%.

I think BBC1 might take the news as normal and bring Murray back onto BBC1 at 7pm.

No schedule changes at 6 - shocker.

George Entwistle has started badly.

Give them time. They did get quite a hammering last time around when they ditched regional news.

They've just put a severe weather warning in place for this region and I know a few places are currently flash flooding. It'd be nice to see the local news tonight! (thought BBC Radio Newcastle are covering it too)

No chance. Murray will remain on BBC One until the conclusion.

I was wrong!
