Why only keep only one set of viewers happy when you could quite easily keep both happy? It's a bit of a no brainer for that reason.
Also we didn't even get the BBC Two peak so I'm not sure the BBC One peaks taken in isolation tell us much. It was always going to peak highly in the 7pm hour due to it containing the conclusion of the match and also the fact that in the meantime viewers were switching on expecting other programmes.”
The Tennis between 13:45 and 18:00 averaged 3.14m (31%). The News hour between 18:00 and 19:00 averaged 3.85m (21.5%).
Given the average of 3.14m, one would assume that the audience gradually built up, surpassing 4 million early in the 17:00 hour, and peaking with 5.1 million.
The channel switch then
lost the Tennis one million viewers with an average of 4.09m (23%) between 18:00 and 19:00, yet it still beat the News.
Had the Tennis remained on BBC One, the 18:00 to 20:00 period on BBC One would have had at least 5.1 million or higher, quite possibly an average in the low 6 millions.
