Well then the article obviously means 2nd lowest rating this series

They're probably about equally headline worthy. BB had a poor rating, but it wasn't as low as it has been in the past, whilst ITV had a poor night but the numbers weren't as poor as those for some of their other entertainment efforts recently. It was a pretty uneventful night so I guess they just latched on to something they could spin as being headline worthy.

I agree with you, ITV's figures for some massively hyped shows, should have been the headline, the BB rating is relatively meh.

So once again, a third (at least) showing of Mrs Brown's Boys in a late night slot handsomely beat everything ITV1 could come up with yesterday.

The BSI keeping up the fine tradition of launching a new series of Dr Who on a summer bank holiday weekend (and probably at 6pm), when the potential available audience is suitably depressed, and thus enabling the Daily Mail, Kevin Sullivan from the Mirror and other Beeb-bashers, to have something else to bash the Beeb with.

You've got to hand it to them...

At least we know when to dig our rusting BBQs out of the shed then - summer inevitably starts in 6 weeks time...

A bit daft, really.

Presumably there will be a shorter Ten, as normally the regional news and weather is only done with and the next BBC1 programme ready to start at around 10.38pm.

I notice on the ratings news page a link to the story "Superstar final 11 revealed - pictures"

This viewer lives in Doncaster.
This viewer lives in Dover.
Here's a couple from Ilford who can't find the remote control.
And a family of four from Walsall who really like Dawn French.
And, finally, a couple and their dog from Salford.

And the descriptions for each programme:

12:00 - Having arrived from Greece on May 18, the Olympic flame has been carried around the UK for the past 69 days, with almost 8,000 bearers bringing the excitement of the Games to the thousands of well-wishers who turned out to greet them. Today the torch is making its final journey through the streets of London toward the Olympic Stadium, where tonight it will be used to light the cauldron - a sign that the 30th Olympiad has begun. Sophie Raworth and Jane Hill follow the final day of the relay, and look ahead to the opening ceremony and the 16 days of exciting sporting competition to follow.

17:00 - With four hours to go before the eyes of the world are focused on the East End of London, Sophie Raworth presents live coverage as excitement mounts in anticipation of an event not held in the UK since 1948.

19:00 - Seven years after the announcement that the 2012 Olympic Games were to be held in London, the moment has finally arrived. One billion people are expected to be watching worldwide as an 80,000 capacity crowd fills the purpose-built stadium in the East End for the official start of the 30th Olympiad. This live programme follows the run-up to the ceremony, with BBC reporters capturing the atmosphere in the Olympic Park as crowds and dignitaries arrive to take their seats, and around the rest of the UK as people eagerly anticipate 16 days of sporting competition.

21:00 - The countdown is over - now the ceremony begins with a show produced by Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle. The chime of the largest harmonically tuned bell in Europe is the cue for the cast of 10,000 volunteers to take the stage in a pageant about a land recovering from its industrial legacy. It promises country scenes, with families taking picnics, farmers tilling the soil and people playing sports on the village green, on a set featuring real farmyard animals and landmarks like Glastonbury Tor. But further details are being kept strictly under wraps. The panorama also includes two mosh-pits, representing the Glastonbury festival and the Last Night of the Proms, while the music - if recent reports are to be believed - is an eclectic selection ranging from the Beatles to the Monty Python theme tune. The performance is followed by the athletes' parade, in which more than 200 countries are represented. Then the Queen will carry out the official opening, before the arrival of the Olympic flame, when the identity of the final torchbearer - who has the honour of lighting the cauldron that will burn for the next 16 days of competition - will be revealed. Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Huw Edwards are among the presenters and commentators.”

I'm very disappointed they are not using Fearne Cotton, Matt Baker and Alex Jones.

Superstar is a special case. Countless hours of ITV primetime are being devoted to it over the next week or so. The ratings should be a cut above their usual summer fare and they simply are not, rating worse than clapped out The Cube last night which itself didn't find many more for its big episode.

You can just imagine what Mr Millar's reports would be like if Superstar was flopping on BBC One I'm surprised he didn't lead on the ratings for Flog It.

Yes, ITV have done extremely well with their Tour de France coverage but when they took it on it was only getting coverage on Eurosport, and it was a while before they started doing live coverage as well as highlights. In addition to the cost of the rights, the difference between the Open and their other sporting events is that they would also need to be the host broadcaster and not just supplement the world feed. ITV may want to put more sport on ITV4, but ITV4's budget isn't big enough to take on the Beeb and Sky.

The Open would be an awful choice anyway as it's too big for ITV4 but not big enough for ITV1, it's the ideal sport for mostly BBC2 with a BBC1 climax.

Saying that makes it sound like BBC1 were completely devastated but New Tricks was only about 300k behind the brand new Case Sensitive and McIntrye presumably thrashed everything at 10.35, so for a half-arsed repeat-stuffed night (which is only expected in this no-man's land between the Euros and the Olympics) that worked out OK for BBC1.

I had wondered if the lead-in would have buggered up Angelos but it actually got quite a decent one, although I don't know how much audience crossover there'd be. It was amiable enough but I think Angelos might work a bit better in small doses, this didn't really give us much we didn't already see in the pilot, and I dunno how repetitive it's going to be.

I like how yesterday we got the last in the series of The Million Pound Drop and on Friday we get the first in a new series of The Million Pound Drop. I know it's a bit different because it's all celebrities and not live but it looks stupid, the changes are minimal as far as the viewer's concerned. Next Saturday's scheduling is ridiculous, seven o'clock with a post-midnight repeat. Why are C4 wasting new programmes there?

Robbie's right, that does look a bit daft, though with no regional news I hope they do a handover, like when Michael Buerk used to say "Newsnight is over on BBC2", and nod his head as if in the direction of BBC2. I used to love that. It might have made more sense to put something between the two and have Newsnight at eleven.

Yes, these Superstar ratings are appalling and you'd have to hope for their sakes that the stripped shows pull in a bit of excitement. But it was never going to be that much of a hit, certainly not enough to justify stripping, as the Lloyd Weeber shows were never really at the top tier of BBC1 shows and were probably declining when they stopped doing them there, and there's been a long gap since the last one.

Matt Baker is of course involved in the Olympics, he's commentating on the gymnastics which he's been doing for ages, long before he was The One Show and when he was still on Blue Peter in fact, which he should because he used to be a gymnast and knows lots about it. I will NOT have any slights at Matt Baker, he was the best Blue Peter presenter ever and he is a lovely, lovely man.

And despite Brekkie moaning I don't see the problem with non-sports presenters involved in the general Olympics hoopla. Look at Adrian Chiles, he hadn't presented any sport before he did MOTD2 but he loved football and was a breath of fresh air. I don't see why the likes of Bill Turnbull - who is an absolutely demented football fan - and Alex Jones don't have the skill to present - not commentate, not pundit - a few colour pieces in the Olympics.

Another poor figure for Superstar - tonight is the start of the live shows so we could maybe see a slight increase especially as there's a Corrie lead in. Maybe it can just squeeze past 3m.

I LOL'ed last night when Davina said it was the last in the series of the Million Pound Drop, but we'll be back next week with celebrities! That is so so daft. The majority of viewers must have been like especially as last night's edition had some Z listers from TOWIE on there anyway! Still it's doing OK for Channel 4 but I think it could get consistent 2m+ audiences if they treated it better.

ITV3 keeps up its strong performance

Using this data as a rough guide - number of viewers watching television last night:

Surprised that The Cube broke the 3m mark, perhaps the Olympic theme helped it out. Superstar seems to be stuck although the best you can say is that it's not losing a significant amount of viewers. I think it probably needed to be more in the 3.5m range for ITV to want to try another one. Another ITVS entertainment show failing.

On the other hand, I suspect ITV overall did rather well last night. ITV3 tying for 3rd in primetime? ITV4 has been rating well recently so the TdF highlights could have delivered a good share for them. And we've seen worse from ITV1.

Very poor for Big Brother. On the plus side, Saturday nights can sometimes be a bit erratic from what I remember so it might just be a blip.

Secret Fortune seems to do OK for BBC1, perhaps helped by being in between the film and Casualty.
