Just had 'Wiltshire Dry cured Oak Smoked Streaky Bacon' and black pudding on toast, yummy.

I get 500g at a time, and replace every time it runs out, can't be without it.

The Sun is out, must get outside for a bit before it goes back in.

flossie's clip (which I can't quote as we've moved) I'm more shocked that they're actually having a conversation!!!

I suppose nowadays they must do something to screen out the embryos- I remember as a child you would quite often get an egg with a blood spot in it (fertilised). Even though they're free range now, you don't see that. I suppose they don't keep cocks *shrugs* I'm rambling

They dont need to screen out the embryos because the eggs are produced the same without the cockeral being there.
If there is a cockerel present the eggs may be fertilized but they will appear identical to unfertilized eggs but will only develop into chicks if they are incubated.
The blood spots are not a fertilized egg. This was just a myth.

I saw a program about the eggs, sure they have separate chickens, one set with fertilised eggs another set with no cockerels so the eggs are for sale.

The fertilised eggs are incubated and then separated into male/female, think the male are disposed of as they are of no use because they can't lay eggs.

Well I never knew that

Why don't we get them nowadays?

I assumed they just ran them over a light source on a conveyer belt or something to screen them out, or even simpler....have no cockerels

No, it makes no difference if they are fertilized or not.
I was surprised about the Hitler ignorance but the school curriculum only lightly touches on the reasons for the war before exam level, however, the egg cycle is thoroughly explained for 6-7 year olds so i cant imagine how she could not know.

Two reasons. You are right that they can be detected with light (like the double yolks) and those might be removed and sold at a lower grade, but also that the blood spot is re-absorbed and indicates a very fresh egg.
With the production and packaging system most of the eggs we eat are much staler than they were some years ago.
A fresh egg broken in the pan will have its albumen thick and piled tightly around it but an older egg white will spread across the pan.
Fresh eggs sink in a bowl of water while older ones tilt up, or float if they are very old. (discard the floaters)

It's quite sad really, how ignorance and messing about at school appears to be heralded

I can't really believe she didn't know what an egg was.

She taught me something today: I had always thought that the blood spot meant they were fertilised

You are about Ashleigh's age. Did you know about fertilization/incubation? Did you have a farm trip? and do you remember being taught about Hitler?
I am reminded of Brian Belo who had actually studied Shakespeare.
