Drinks tasting differently in a can than from a bottle...
I brought some strawberry cider from the supermarket the other day, normally I buy bottles but the cans were on offer. Tried them this evening and it seems to taste different in a can than when I had it from a bottle, still tastes nice but still different.
Has anybody else ever noticed this with cider/beer etc? |

Non researched based thought would that the drink reacts with the can whereas glass is non reactive.

I've noticed this. The same could be said for non-alcoholic drinks.

Very noticable with bitter, less so with lager & cider - but that maybe due to me drinking lager/cider cold
![]() Best way to drink bitter is from the cask of course, though not always practical

Personally the only way I can drink vimto is from a can.
The taste is different from a bottle, not good compared to a can. I think its the metally taste with the fruit that I love. |

Coke in cans is much better than in the plastic bottles. But the glass bottles are definitely the best, just a shame they are so much more expensive.

Lucozade is quite different (better, I think) when it's in a can.

On a related note, what is with the new 375(ish, can't remember exactly) ml plastic bottles of coke etc in service stations (and possibly others). Stopped at one on the M1 last night to get a drink, picked up the bottle without really looking at it and the rip of price (about £1.40). It was not till I got back to the car and went to open it that I noticed it was only 375ml rather than the usual 500ml plastic bottles so was even more expensive than I thought... eek! |

I went to the Coca-Cola factory once and they explained that they put more gas into the plastics bottles so that it will last. That's probably why they taste different.

The reason there is a taste difference may be down to the fact can drinks have a coating of water based varnish inside the can to stop the aluminium cans reacting with the contents.

The difference with Stella Cidre is amazing. It's like a completely different drink out of a can and much nicer imo. Out of a bottle it tastes like Lucozade Apple flavour.

I hardly ever buy tinned real ale as it always tastes foul. It's much nicer in a bottle and even better from a cask.
