Of course not. The fact that it was in Corrie is nothing to do with it

You'd have thought they'd have checked before saying the line. Where did they get the idea she was dead from?

I must admit I thought she must have passed away. Not heard about her for years.

Here is a full article:

Red-faced Coronation Street bosses today apologised to veteran actress Googie Withers after scriptwriters consigned her to an early grave.

The 87-year-old performer, who played the role of prison governor in the 70s series Within These Walls, was mentioned in a recent episode of the hit soap.

Referring to the poor state of Britain’s jails, character Norris Cole, played by actor Malcolm Hebden, said “Googie Withers would turn in her grave”.

But the vintage star, who has played alongside screen greats including Geoffrey Rush and Vanessa Redgrave, is very much alive and well and now lives in Sydney, Australia.

Ms Withers was said to have taken the blunder in good spirits.

A spokeswoman said on her behalf she had taken the slight in good humour and expected it was unintentional.

The show’s producers said facts were thoroughly checked before featuring in scripts but that errors were sometimes made.

A spokesman said: “We obviously apologise for any distress this may have caused either to Googie or her family.”

Ms Withers starred in the 1996 film Shine and appeared in Lady Windermere’s Fan at London’s Haymarket Theatre in 2002.

She also made guest appearances in the Australian crime drama Boney The Aboriginal Detective.

Gasp! She was the Governess in Within These Walls, classic 70's prison drama. Look her up on www.imdb.com for a list of her impressive roles.

Another slight embarassment:

Seems that bosses at Corrie may AGAIN have to re-think ditching that Harris family. While daughter Katy is staying, I can reveal that an online petition has been sent to the studio, along with letters from devoted fans of the family. I hear bosses are now having a good think about their next move.
