How do these online status indicators work?

Those indicators on the left that show that you're online, how do they work? Is it based on me having the website open? What if I was to leave it open all day and just wander off and do nothing? Will it stay on or is it more simply a case of a timer from my last request/response to the web server?

Thanks

If the website is open and you're logged in to the site it'll show you online, regardless of whether you're using the site or not.

i doubt DS knows the page is open after you have requested it. not that this is impossible, just unnecessary.

i would have thought the easiest thing for vbulletin to do would be show you as online if you had requested a page in the last 5 minutes or something like that.

are you sure. how do you know you're on line.

you can set it to off i think in the userCP. it also gets a bit confused if you use more than one device and everything is cached too.

i think i've described how it should work, why it doesn't i don't know.

Invisible mode allows you to browse the forums without appearing in the 'Currently Active Users' lists.
That is all I can see in User CP , it is unticked but if I hover over the icon below my name it says I'm off line ... I'm signed in.

Edit: after posting that I'm now online, must be a time thing ?

that is a cache thing i think.

if you are offline in this thread you would not become online until somebody posts in it and the page is regenerated.

By default vBulletin shows a user as online/active if they've made contact with vBulletin in the last 15 minutes. If they haven't then they're classed as offline. Users can choose to be invisible which hides their online status, and they appear offline to others except administrators.

The 15 minute setting can be changed to a different number, although, like most things on this place, I doubt it has.

Incorrect. You'll appear online to yourself if you have left a thread open/your profile open because the page hasn't been refreshed since your status has since changed to offline. You then refresh the page, and you're classed as active again. So therefore you don't ever see yourself as offline, unless you're not logged in, invisible [and I'm pretty sure you are shown as "invisible" to yourself, not offline] or your browser cache is causing oddities. That's simply not how vBulletin works.
