Quick question re: updating Samsung phone

I understand I have to use the Samsung "Kies" software to do this. Is it a straight forward and reliable process or do I need to back up everything first just in case? The reason I ask is because I seem to remember reading something about the Samsung software being a bit flakey (but that was a while ago).

This is for my sister's Samsung Galaxy S so I don't want to mess anything up as I'll never hear the end of it .

Providing you successfully manage to connect in the first place, then backing up the phone is fairly easy - it's an option in the software itself. This will back up pictures, texts, settings etc. I've backed up numerous times before upgrading to the latest firmware and never had a problem with my content coming back.

Backing up is essential of course, should you ever need to restore the phone to factory settings. Good luck.

Thank you very much for the info. I didn't know the software did backups of user data too and I was thinking I'd have use another app to do that. I'm sure I'll be fine as long as the phone connects OK.

No problem. If you want to be doubly be sure - if it's pictures that are most precious, then no harm in saving these by copying across using standard Windows importing.

But the back up option (i think it's the synch/restore tab - but select back up), will safely take care of backing up your sister's important stuff.

Ah. Age old problem, which gives Kies its sometimes flaky reputation. The only way I've ever solved this is to uninstall keys on the computer and then go to the Samsung website and re-download it again. It could be your version of Kies has been corrupted and you need a fresh copy.

This should work, but again, you might still have a problem. You'll probably find hundreds of threads around, titled 'cannot connect to Kies'. Have a look at those if the problem persists.

Had the same problem myself yesterday, finally managed to get Kies to recognise/connect to my SGS2 but it took a couple of hours before that happened (I was very, very close to giving up and rooting my phone instead).

The following thread may be helpful (it was for me):

Help - Samsung Galaxy S2 Won't Connect To Kies

Another option is to do a factory reset on the phone... BUT make sure you back up by alternative means, all valued content. My brother couldn't get his S2 to connect on his own Pc, but could do so on my version of Kies. You could therefore try with another pc, if available.

The joys of Samsung Kies...

The only time I have had issues when updating firmware was when using the official company packages - Sony Ericsson Update Centre, this managed to bric my Arc. And Keis, this was a pain to download and then to get to connect to my Note. All the other times I have updated phones it is by installing custom ROMs and I have never had a problem but I realise that most people will update OTA and most of the rest will use these crummy packages. My only advise to the OP is to make sure you have the latest version of keis on your PC. Oh and tell your sister that there is a good chance her phone will brick (even though there isn't really) and that you are not responsible for this - if she doesn't like it then she should do it herself.

No problems with the latest version of Kies. S2 connects quickly and operates smoothly within it.

Are you using a third party launcher Like GoLaunch? If you are turn it off and connect to Kies while using TW. Sometimes other launchers affect the connection.

I shouldn't laugh but Welcome to the club. Have you tried a different USB port?

You won't see the name....It's the stock launcher which makes everything work. If you look on the play store you will find other launchers, like GoLaunch that you can use to customise your phone differently with no need for rooting....

Just download whatever rom your trying to install, download Odin read how to use it and you will never worry about kies again. I only ever once managed to connect my s2 with kies it's useless. Odin I never had connection issues with.

If you flash with Odin you will loose your warranty. Now that holds no fears for me as I am used to modding phones but people should be aware of the risks.

I think the phrase you actually wanted was 'may lose your warranty' which isn't the same. Provided you make a warranty claim with official software on (which you can still flash with Odin) and if your phone has a flash counter that is still set to zero (which usually is the case with flashing official Rom through Odin) even if you flash counter does go up you can reset it. So 'may' is definitely the word to use.
