Really can't get my head around Scientology although not sure I want to!

was just reading this, shamefully on Daily Mail but sounds plausible:
There is a belief in the church of Scientology that marital problems come from 'withholds' or 'overts' - undiscussed issues or problems.

According to the official website, marriage is considered essential to family life along with the belief that the religion will strengthen bonds between partners.

Scientologists also claim that people who follow the religion are more likely to stay married.

If a couple runs into a problem, they can take courses on how to improve their marriage or speak to counselors.

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...#ixzz1zILfPTsm

so they basically don't believe in divorce but the founder has been married 3 times, how does that work, practice what you preach etc

Hon, I believe that its a mickey mouse based cult that was founded by a sci fi nut. So I'm guessing that everything about it is a sham. I watched a programme on Channel 4 exposing them and it was mind blowing. A man who had left or escaped as he put it was followed relentlessly and others that have left have said that it was basically an organisation that revelled in celebrity and money and went in for brainwashing activities.

I think you are completely right, didn't see the programme but have read few scary things on internet. Children of Scientology, getting sent off on boats becoming disillusioned with religion and wanting to leave. When they get the courage to do so they get disowned by thier parents and are allowed no contact with them. Sounds a really loving and caring religion I don't think

Like all religions, Scientology is irrational, illogical, and based on supernatural bollocks.

What I don't get is, how do people get into it? I don't understand what the draw is, how do they attract followers?

Not so much celebs, but everyday people. I know there is a family of scientologists in my town. I don't live in London, I live in a rather ordinary town in a rather ordinary county. I would have no idea where my nearest scientology branch is. I always thought it was just a Hollywood thing and that a couple of branches had started up in London because there's big celebs living there.

By playing to their egos that they can basically become superhuman if they follow the Scientologist way of life. They'll increase their thetan level if they do good and in turn the universe will reward them.

does anyone know anyone personally who is a member? I dont. It really seems something to avoid, their stuff is scary but they have managed to brainwash Tom Cruise, John T and a whole lot of celebs who I thought would have had more common sense but obviously do not.

Scientology is basically a highly convoluted pyramid scheme.

years ago when i lived in chichester, they used to approach you on a street as if they were doing market research "we're not trying to sell you anything"; all the questions were tilted in a certain direction, "have you ever felt you haven't reached your full potential" "do you ever feel as if you aren't appreciated" that sort of thing.....then at the end of the questions they say you have "low self esteem" but they can help you with that if you just buy this book "dienetics" (don't buy it!!!) they try and get your personal details off you (don't give them) a friend of mine was manhandled out of the room they took you into for the questions because he questioned the validity of their diagnosis and was physically dragged out by two huge guys....i think, like a lot of cults, they sort of prey on people who they can convince have self-esteem issues....then there's all the auditing bullshit and the "levels" Operating Thetan 1 etc but surely you have to be a bit retarded to believe all the nonsense about xenu.....

From my understanding... a few million years ago a race of aliens got thrown off some plant after a civil war, flew away in a spaceship (that looked suspiciously like a DC10) and crashed into a volcano somewhere on earth.

The spirits of these aliens, known as thetans now hang around delivery rooms in hospitals and inhabit new born babies, thus babies are born with fully formed personalities and are treated as adults from day one (well, maybe not day one as I've not met many new born who can dress or feed themselves)

I think that's the premises of it, although an alternative scenario is its a massive money making con dreamed up by an old SiFi writer who realised the best money making scheme in the world was to invent your own religion

This video is fairly long but worth watching to the end. This goes a long way to explain Tom, Scientology and the divorce. Apparently, it was supressed for quite some time but finally managed to leak a while back. TMZ had a link to it earlier today, but it's not there now. Hmmmm

I don't wish to sound rude but exactly how barking mad would one have to be to think 'that sounds so true and historically accurate that I have to join that religion and give them all of my money'?

They don't tell you the really mad stuff until you get so far in that you can't leave.

I wish the people who wheel out the claim that all religions are as bad as Scientology could be quiet when adults are talking. If you really think the Archbishop of Canterbury is the same as the people who run Scientology, you should see your GP. If you don't really think it, spare us the pompous drivel.

I had not seen that clip for ages, hard to get the whole way through as so bizarre, just seems completely brainwashed-I think whoever said earlier about glorified pyramid scheme is right-just so odd. He thinks they are the authority on a lot of things-drugs, rehabilitating criminals etc-where are all these people they help, news stories that scientology changed my life, all I read is bad stuff
Also what is an S P that he laughs manically about half-way through

It is quite laughable. They sound like a right bunch of hypocrites! Also, from looking at Suri in that link, she looks nothing like Tom, and I'm not sure about Katie either. Another certain person she does though.

yes I think the paternity is questionable, isn't it widely believed the father is another less famous actor, her ex. I think Suri looks lots like Katie but Tom I don't really see
