Spec Ops: The Line
Anyone else pick this up yesterday? (or Tuesday if you're in the US). Been playing it for the last two days and it's actually surprisingly good. It plays like Gears of War but with a story that wasn't written by 12 year olds (i love Gears, but the story is hardly it's strongest point). Some of the stuff that happens around the half way point is really dark too, kinda caught me off guard a bit, it's definitely not just another jingoistic "Hoo-rah!" shooter that the trailers make it out to be. If anything it's kinda of like a modern interpretation of Apocalypse Now, set in a half destroyed Dubai.
It's also goregous to look at, with the sand effects rivaling Uncharted 3 imo. I'd highly recommend it based on what i've played so far. |

Sounds like in some ways this would give PS3 owners a chance to experience Gears then ?? (in a round about way)

I'm not sure about this one. It looks good but I'm sick of splashing out on stuff that I trade in a week later. I might pick it up when it's £20ish.

There sould be a campagne for longer, higher quality games, then less games could be made, streamline the industry is what I say. |

Played the demo a couple of time and quite enjoyed it. The cover system isn't perfect but I guess you can adapt, the controls were tight and it felt good to play. To be honest, it does seem just like another generic 3rd person shooter but from the reviews I've read it's actually quite original in a number of ways and has a well written plot.
I wouldn't say it was like Gears of War though apart from the obvious fact it's a 3rd person cover shooter, the gameplay is nowhere near as hectic or fast paced as Gears and the weaponry is completely different, which gives it a different feel. Bad points; Nolan North...again. Sick of his voice.

I have it, it has a great story and "decent" shooting. Will play it through when I return from my self imposed TPS ban (after just finishing Max Payne 3 and Mafia 2 back to back)

I like Nolan North, but I really wouldn't let him voicing the character put you off the game, if anything having him voicing the character works in its favour because you're expecting his character to be a Nathan Drake type "100% hero", but the character is much more ambiguous in his motivations, something that North puts across in his performance really well.
I'm near the end of the game now and i have to say it's been superb. I'd definitely say pick it up if you're wanting something engaging/mature. |

It's a pretty short single player.
Interesting moral and other questions and the ending(s) are a nice feature. Graphically impressive but I feel it could have been so much more than they've made it. |

Seems to be the way with shooters, FPS or TPS. Short campaigns to whet your appetite for MP.
Do like the look and concept of it. Will wait for this to come down in price though. |

Got this for Christmas too, a game I've been wanting to try for a little while now. Very impressed with to far, I'm up to Chapter 10 I think and the story has been very good for this style of game, it doesn't glamorise the violence of war and tries to get the player thinking about his actions. It's all very cool and it has great gameplay and graphics. So far I'd put this above Max Payne 3 as a 3rd person cover shooter.
I just dislike Nathan Drake as a character, too squeaky clean for my liking with all the depth of a puddle but I will say North does a good job here in Spec Ops. |

As for Nolan North, I think he is cool. I've seen him in a few films/tv shows and watched a few interviews and on set stuff he has done alongside Naughty Dog. Apparently he does a pretty good Jason Statham impersonation too. |

![]() Back on topic, Spec Ops the line, I love this game! Very surprised by it, it also has the best minigun set pieces I've ever played in a game. |

Interesting story, beautiful and unique environments and very mediocre gameplay.
