Why does everyone like Phil Mitchell?

The guy is a out and out bully only out for himself he has never helped anyone accept his family.

Everyone dislikes Derek because what he has done to people since arriving, but Phil is much worse bullying Ian for years and all the other stuff he has done in the past. Only reason he called a truce with Ian was to protect Ben from going to prison if Ian told the police who killed Heather!

I don't know about everyone and I don't know as to whether I like him or not. I'm indifferent towards him. I do think he's a good actor but that's as far as it goes and I do think if he left, the show would lose another iconic character. Who have we got left now of any history? Dot, Ian and Phil and Sharon when she comes back - but she won't stick around.

Well Phil is old school and he, as far as we know, is going to be around for a long time. So people have to be nice to him, or else they will incur his drug addled wrath. But you are right in that I don't think there is a single person on the street he hasnt done over in some way or another.

Ian Beale is a weasel and deserves everything he gets

Big Phil does him a favour keeping him in check if Phil wasn't around beale would have gotten himself killed with his slimy scheming ways

Beale is lucky Phil goes easy on him imo

A non-biased viewpoint of course, which I don't agree with! It's not as simple as that; the fued between Ian and Phil is equally shared in terms of both of them being as bad as each other and as stubborn as one another. Phil has helped Ian and Ian has helped Phil out in times of adversity.

I didn't watch Eastenders in the 90s when Phil was worse to Ian. But looking at clips it looked like Phil was just bullying Ian for hardly any reason

Because it was funny. Also, Ian was a real shit to people on the square. Often times, it would be Ian being nasty to people for most of the year, then Phil would get him back and we would be happy. Ian has been the good guy and the bad guy.

Because we can like a character without approving of their behaviour. Thus the likes of Den, Grant, Phil and Max will always be popular with the viewer. In some ways they are our worst nightmare but where's the fun in watching the good guys like Ricky and Minty.
As long as they have the odd redeeming feature it seems we're OK with them.
The same applies to the females. It's the bad girls that give us the most drama....Janine, Kat. Pat and to an extent Tanya. The likes of Heather and Dot have their place but they do not create drama, although they can get caught up in it.

Phil hasn't always been a git, when he first came into EE he was the nice brother.

I hate these generalizations.

There was one recently where someone posted a thread expressing how EVERYONE was glad Ben was leaving.

Phil is just a great character. Entertaining, explosive, volatile, passionate. I do find his apparent invincibility slightly wearing at times, especially at the expense of other characters.

Yes, they then changed him and almost melded the personalities of and Grant and Phil when Ross Kemp left.

One of my favourite scenes of early Phil were when he danced with Ethel Skinner in the pub. Phil and Grant also had some lovely scenes with Arthur Fowler too.

Wasn't Ian Beale a loan shark at some point and no one knew how he could afford to even be one

Yup.

People forget about the things Beale has got upto and got himself involved in.

If Phil wasn't around seriously you could have seen Ian getting himself involved with guys like Johnny Allen or someone and winding them up. If that happened he would have been supporting a fly-over on the M25.

Phil actually goes easy on Ian and in my opinon, stops himfrom getting out of hand.

I'm not a particular big fan of Phil, his somewhat tolerable at the moment, I don't like the invincible bubble they seem to put around him though like everybody in the square is afraid of him, I don't like Derek either I guess it works really they have some villainy and anti hero qualities about them they not portrayed as good guys your not suppose to like their behaviour or actions.
