Name servers
Hi guys,
I've bought a hosting account on a shared server where I've put together a website. I've bought a .co.uk domain and changed the name servers to the ones given by the hosting. The domain has definitely propagated (I've checked the WHOIS records and it's showing correctly). The problem is... the domain www.XXXXXXX.co.uk doesn't go to the site. It might be worth pointing out that the main domain was registered with a different URL to the one I'm currently trying to get working. Is there something I need to do in the hosting cpanel or somewhere else to get the site to work? Thanks for your help guys |

it can take upto a couple of days for all the dns servers to update to the new address so it may be that your isp's dns servers are taking it easy on the updating side, you could try flushing the dns on the computer you are using it as it may be using the old address in an admin shell do "ipconfig /flushdns"

Thanks for this but I don't think this is the problem.
Is there anything else I need to do other than change the name servers on the new URL to the ones given by the hosting company? Personally I don't understand how a .net / .co.uk / .com etc can all point to the same shared name server and the site knows which one points to which part of the hosting? Surely there are some more settings in the .HTACCESS or in the CPANEL or somewhere which needs changing too? Thanks |

i'll assume the techies have added your site to the vhosts on the server?

otherwise the server wont know which of the shared customers should be hosting it. if there is not a domains section in your cpanel then you will need the host to add it. |

Ahhhh that makes sense! I thought so!
As you've said... I've pointed the domain at the server. I now need to add the domain into the cpanel? How do I do this? Is it adding it as a parked domain? Thanks for your help guys! |

no parked domains are something different.
cpanel can be set up differently. but mine has a main domain says it at the top on the left hand side which is set by my hosting company, supplementary domains can be add-on or parked. |

Right... I've deleted that parked one and set it up as an Add-on - is this correct?
When I do this it seems to want to create a subdomain and also likes to create a username and password. Is this ok? How long will it take for the new domain to work (take you to the site)? Thanks |

Just contact your support, have them add it as your main domain. The change will be immediate as it's just a config thing dns will have already propagated.
