Mid seventies, the one hit wonder era

While the punks generally loathe this period between glam and punk, I think it threw up some really unique novelty records that would never chart now. I really laugh when I hear Don Estelle and Windsor Davies singing Whispering Grass, French balladeers like Gilbert Becaud and Charles Aznavour getting their moment of fame, Robin Sarstedt doing a Hoagy Carmichael cover and Telly Savalas getting a major hit with If.

Some other one hit artists who had their only hit in the 70's

Afternoon Delight - Starlight Vocal Band

Ain't No Stopping Us Now - McFadden & Whitehead

Lovin You' - Minnie Ripperton

Montego Bay - Bobby Bloom

I'm Doing Fine Now - New York City

Fooled Around & Fell In Love - Alvin Bishop

Autobahn - Kraftwork

How Long - Ace

All better songs than the dross that makes up the charts these days

Kraftwerk had several singles. They also had a number one with The Model.

Wir fahren auf dem Autobahn, a revolutionary record that jumped past punk to the synthesiser boom that started in 1980. Kraftwerk were excellent.
Also anyone remember a bizarre German rock band called Can who had a minor hit in 1976?

The fact that I remember every single one of those songs when I've not heard many of them for over 30 years surely says something .

A lot of recent chart hits such as Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas, Like a G6 by Far East Movement, E.T. by Katy Perry and others probably wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Kraftwerk.

i dont think the mid 70's was a special time for one hit wonders, you can find them from any era, in fact i think there will be alot from the modern era.

uptown top ranking anyone?...lol.. great track! (althia and donna)

Then Kraftwerk, though I quite like them, certainly have a lot to answer for!

However, would we get the star of an American police series, or two people out of a sitcom, getting to number one now? It seemed in the post glam, pre punk era anyone could get a hit even two Radio 1 DJs. Remember Convoy GB?
Actually I was having a seventies one hit wonder session on You Tube last night and I do recommend Robin Sarstedt, brother of that other one hit wonder Peter, covering My Resistance Is Low.

Well I wouldn't say DLT and Paul Burnett were Simon and Garfunkel, but it was good for a laugh at the time. Some were awful, but a lot were good and it was a shame Robin Sarstedt never made it after the first hit, but the same fate befell his brother.

Yes, it was called I Want More.

Can were notorious for their eccentric lead singers, one of whom had to leave the band for health reasons when he was found on a flight of stairs, singing the words "upstairs, downstairs" over and over for several hours.

Doubt if many of the one hit wonders of recent times will even be remembered next year , never mind from 30 odd years from now ..

Malcolm Mooney, he sang a song called You Do Right for two hours at a festival in 1969.

You're right, DLT and Paul Burnett are certainly no Simon and Garfunkel. I don't mind comedy songs if they're funny, but "Convoy GB" isn't even remotely funny (imo). That song is embarrassing and best forgotten, as is the appalling C W McCall song they were parodying.

Which of Robin's brothers are you talking about, Peter Sarstedt or Richard Sarstedt (aka Eden Kane)?

The same fate did not befall either of them. Neither was a one hit wonder.

"Frozen Orange Juice", which was Peter Sarstedt's follow-up single to his no.1 "Where Do You Go To My Lovely" made the top ten in 1969, although he had no more hits after that one.

Eden Kane had five top ten hits in the early sixties.

Hi, DLT also does an appalling and nowadays un PC impersonation of a Jamaican bus conductor.
I never knew Eden Kane was the brother to Peter and Robin Sarstedt, but Robin was the one hit wonder and I know Peter is classed as one by many people, even though Frozen Orange Juice briefly entered the Top 10.

I like Robin's only hit single a lot, and I don't mind Eden Kane, but I wish Peter Sarstedt was a no hit wonder!

Where Do You Go To My Lovely has some cringeworthy lyrics and Peter Sarstedt sings in some cod French accent. Robin was a better singer.
