If it's the same one as I think it is, he's been a sportsreader on 5 Live's overnight shows for a couple of years.
On reflection, I think you are correct. I would have thought that the sportsreaders are based in Salford so it is strange to send one to London as a reporter. |

Thanks for the correction Westy and Connor. I missed the mention of WM's DAB coverage of the Aston Villa match.
Did anyone listen to Absolute Radio's coverage of Tottenham v Sunderland for any duration of time? I flicked over to it on a couple of occasions during the afternoon, during which time I heard them cutting across to Adam Bridge and Frank Stapleton at Newcastle v Arsenal on a few occasions. By the time I headed over there during second half stoppage time, they had switched to St James' Park for commentary on the closing stages of that match. I listened to Matchday Live for the most part this afternoon and I have to say I was very impressed with the service they provided. It was a different kind of Around the Grounds show to the one they usually do, in that they went as close to commentary as they possibly could, although in not quite as stark a manner as was the case on the final day last year (when Adrian Durham handed over the reigns to Sam Matterface at Manchester City v QPR while the matches were taking place). They effectively took regular short bursts of commentary from the four games they had two people at, these being Newcastle United v Arsenal with Graham Courtney and Michael Gray, Tottenham v Sunderland with Sam and Stan, plus to a lesser extent Chelsea v Everton with Ian Danter and Ray Parlour and West Brom v Manchester United with Dave Rowe and Adrian Durham. I guess the Premier League must now take a fairly liberal approach to what radio stations can do on the final day given that talkSPORT have been allowed to sail close to the wind regarding the length and amount of reports they were able to take from each game and that Radio 5 Live and Absolute appeared to be able to do spells of commentary from their rival station's "exclusive" live game, something that seems to suit all three stations well and is a situation I imagine they'd prefer to the alternative of them all having to work within tighter restrictions regarding what they can do which would curb their ability to cover the games in the way they'd like to. What Matchday Live did worked really well though and again I was particularly impressed with the role Graham Courtney played in the show. He's been fortunate enough to be their man at the biggest games on the final days of both the Premier League and Championship season this year (which was probably more a question of geography than anything else) and he's done justice to both occasions. Having heard him do what effectively was a partial commentary today, I'd quite like to hear him given the chance to do a full commentary next season. Given the amount of live games they cover during FA Cup Third to Fifth Round weekends this should surely be possible. The other thing I noticed about Matchday Live today was the lack of commercial breaks while the games were in progress - from memory they had one after they'd finished doing the team news just prior to kick-off and one after the half-time classified scores. That was it until the segue between Matchday Live and Call Collymore after all the full-times had been wrapped up I think - usually they have a break every 15 minutes or so during a normal Saturday afternoon show, so I guess they must have felt it was worth having less adverts between 4-6pm when they would be competing for listeners with other stations. |

Has anyone heard anything about the Premier League's Irish national radio deal for the next three years? I think it is one of the few 2013-16 contracts that has yet to be (at least publically) confirmed. Over the past two contracts, Today FM have held rights to Saturday 3pm games while Newstalk 106-108FM have held rights to Sunday 1.30pm and 4pm matches. Both stations are owned by Communicorp.

Absolute crossed back to Jim Proudfoot just in time for him to describe the Bale goal (it was definitely live because I had the Sky pictures as well). I think Absolute's football coverage is very refreshing, it's enthusiastic and informative and Proudfoot & Bridge captured the excitement of the last day perfectly. In addition Russ Williams is a good sports anchor. I can see why it's been nominated for awards in the past. |

Thanks for the information SouthCity. I agree with you about Absolute Radio's football coverage - it has a nice feel to it and the "football and music collide" interviews they do in the build-up give it a unique selling point. In addition they have a superb presenter in Russ Williams, an outstanding commentator in Jim Proudfoot and three very good regular co-commentators in Stewart Robson, Tony Dorigo and Clive Allen. It richly deserves the recognition it gets.

talkSPORT Live commentary statistics 2012/13
I have been totalling up the commentary figures from talkSPORT Live throughout their first season as the global radio broadcaster of the Premier League and with the top flight league campaign and both domestic cups having concluded, I thought I would share the final numbers as to who did what over the course of season.
talkSPORT Live broadcast live commentary on all 380 Premier League games plus 33 other matches: 24 from the FA Cup, 8 from the Capital One Cup and the FA Community Shield. Of these, 16 of their FA Cup commentaries were direct relays of broadcasts from talkSPORT UK, as such I've not included the details of the commentators or co-commentators used on those relays in the statistics below, which only includes commentaries that were unique to talkSPORT Live. Here goes: Commentators - all matches (games airing both on international radio stations and on talkSPORT.com only) Alex Crook - 38 games Kevin Hatchard - 38 Richard Connelly - 37 Piers Edwards - 36 Adam Bridge - 34 Tim Long - 29 Toby Gilles - 26 Phil Blacker - 22 Keith Hall - 22 Mark Tompkins - 22 John Anderson - 18 Tom Rennie - 16 Dan Wheeler - 15 David Oates - 10 Peter Martin - 9 Ian Danter - 7 Phil Barker - 6 Russell Hargreaves - 5 Will Gavin - 3 Chris Sharples - 2 Ian Beach - 1 Tony Lockwood - 1 Commentators - featured matches (games that were broadcast on talkSPORT Live's international radio partners as a main commentary game) Richard Connelly - 35 Alex Crook - 25 Piers Edwards - 25 Phil Blacker - 22 Tom Rennie - 14 John Anderson - 12 Kevin Hatchard - 11 Adam Bridge - 10 Peter Martin - 8 David Oates - 8 Ian Danter - 7 Mark Tompkins - 5 Toby Gilles - 2 Tim Long - 2 Tony Lockwood - 1 Dan Wheeler - 1 Phil Barker, Ian Beach, Will Gavin, Keith Hall, Russell Hargreaves and Chris Sharples only commentated on games that aired solely on talkSPORT.com. In contrast, Phil Blacker and Ian Danter only commentated on games that were carried on talkSPORT Live's international radio service as well as talkSPORT.com, in the case of Blacker almost all of his 22 live games were Sunday 4pm kick-offs. Co-Commentators (only used on featured games broadcast by talkSPORT Live's international radio partners) Paul Mortimer - 40 Matt Lawrence - 28 Darren Eadie - 26 Paul McVeigh - 24 Bobby Gould - 15 Alan McLoughlin - 14 Alvin Martin - 11 Jason Euell - 7 Kevin Watson - 6 Sean Davis - 5 Marc Bircham - 3 Stewart Robson - 3 Nicky Summerbee - 3 Clive Walker - 1 In total, talkSPORT Live produced 397 commentaries of their own this season, 188 of them airing on international radio as a featured game of that broadcast. However only 186 of those featured games possessed co-commentary. Richard Connelly flew solo for Reading v Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 16th September, as I believe did Alex Crook on the Chelsea v Manchester United League Cup tie on Wednesday 31st October (although I don't have confirmation of that, so might be missing that one detail). NB: Dan Wheeler was the commentator scheduled to do Sunderland v Reading on the second Saturday of the season for talkSPORT.com before that fixture was postponed on the afternoon of the game. That hasn't been included in the stats. The rescheduled game was commentated on by Alex Crook and Matt Lawrence across talkSPORT Live's international radio partners, which has been included instead. Some analysis: in the case of the featured games, talkSPORT Live had a quartet of main commentators who were most frequently used on these matches in Richard Connelly, Alex Crook, Piers Edwards and Phil Blacker. Up there in number with them across all talkSPORT Live commentaries were Kevin Hatchard (whose numbers increased during the second half of the season) and Adam Bridge, who along with John Anderson and service editor Tom Rennie made up the second tier of their most frequently heard commentators on featured games. As far as the co-commentators went, Paul Mortimer was by far the most heard voice in this area with Matt Lawrence, Darren Eadie and Paul McVeigh also being regulars. Their commentary teams for major "showpiece" games were: Chelsea v Manchester City (FA Community Shield) - Ian Danter and Matt Lawrence Bradford City v Swansea City (Capital One Cup Final) - Alex Crook and Matt Lawrence Manchester United v Aston Villa (Premier League title clincher) - Tom Rennie and Alan McLoughlin Manchester City v Wigan Athletic (FA Cup Final) - Sam Matterface and Stan Collymore, with Ian Abrahams at pitchside (as talkSPORT UK) Manchester United v Swansea City (Premier League trophy presentation game) - Richard Connelly and Darren Eadie While I'm here, I also have commentary statistics from Absolute Radio now that their coverage of the Premier League is over for another season. They actually exceeded their 32 match quota by two games, or three if you include their coverage of Newcastle United v Arsenal on the final day of the league season. Their commentary games included two matches - Reading v Fulham on 27th October and Reading v Aston Villa on 9th March - that were broadcast on 105.8FM in London rather than on their usual national analogue platform of 1215AM. Russ Williams presented all 34 editions of Rock 'N' Roll Football Live, with him being joined by Perry Groves for 33 of those shows - the one exception being their coverage of Stoke City v Queens Park Rangers on the 10th November when Clive Allen joined Russ. Russ presented 33 of these shows from the studio, but was on-site at QPR v Chelsea on the 15th September, when their live game was Manchester United v Wigan Athletic. Jim Proudfoot commentated on all 34 of their main live games with Adam Bridge handling spells of commentary from the aforementioned Newcastle United v Arsenal fixture. Their co-commentary numbers are as follows: Stewart Robson - 15 games Tony Dorigo - 12 Clive Allen - 6 Frank Stapleton - 2 (including Newcastle United v Arsenal) I have similar statistics for talkSPORT UK's football commentaries throughout 2012/13, but I will be keeping my powder dry on that front until the season has properly concluded - they still have three commentary games to come in the Championship Play-Off Final on Bank Holiday Monday and England's friendlies with the Republic of Ireland and Brazil, so I shall wait until those matches have taken place before I post the full talkSPORT details. |

talkSPORT's schedule for Monday...
00:00 Extra Time with Russell Hargreaves 06:00 The Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast 10:00 Danny Kelly & Micky Quinn 13:00 Matchday Live - Championship Playoff Final - Crystal Palace v Watford 17:00 Call Collymore - Live from Wembley 19:00 Kick-Off with Ian Danter 22:00 Andy Goldtein's Sports Bar Elsewhere, talkSPORT will broadcast a Kick-Off International Special on Sunday 2nd July between 18:00-22:00 replacing The Press Pass and Full Conact for live commentary of Brazil v England. It also seems that Danny Kelly and Micky Quinn will present the 10:00-13:00 slot from next Monday for the summer until Richard Keys and Andy Gray return in August. |

Further to the details 4-4-2 has posted about talkSPORT's coverage of the Championship Play-Off Final, the schedule states that Mark Saggers will be presenting Matchday Live from Wembley Stadium. This is slightly surprising call given that Adrian Durham usually presents their live coverage of this fixture and IMO has a greater knowledge of the Football League than Saggers, but that Ian Danter will be presenting Kick Off later that day would appear to confirm that this isn't a typo. Brian Moore will be presenting the Weekend Sports Breakfast with Mark Saggers during the Lions tour rather than his usual co-host Micky Quinn, so it follows that they'd switch him to mid-mornings this summer. I imagine Ian Danter and Georgie Bingham will get their fair share of fill-in opportunities on Kick Off during the summer, perhaps Russell Hargreaves might get a chance to host it as well after impressing on Full Contact and Extra Time. |

I'm a bit surprised Keys and Gray have already finished for the season? I'd have thought they'd do shows up until this coming Friday instead given there's the Champions League/Championship play-off finals to catch up on amongst other things.
I was also surprised to just read John Murray did the last match of the season for 5 Live. I'd have thought it would be Green or Ingham but I suppose comparatively there wasn't much riding on it so they thought it fair to spread it out a bit. Wonder if it will be Green and Ingham for the Champions League final this evening? I guess it's more likely given it's at Wembley and also no major tournament this summer - maybe Ingham in particular wouldn't do it if it was abroad considering no English teams. (Of course he still might not!) |

not that surprising really that Keys and Gray have gone now. if you think about it, the two matches you refer to are today and Monday so, other than maybe a show looking back on them on Tuesday, they wouldn't be much for them to talk about.

:True, but then they'd only have 3 shows to fill! And I'm sure some stuff will happen in terms of manager changes, etc. during the course of the week, plus I think there are international matches on Wednesday and Saturday? It's not really a big deal; just given these are 2 of the biggest football matches of the season I'd have thought having a predomnantly football show analysing them would have been a sensible and logical move.
Edit: That's in response to Keys and Gray. |

As an aside, I used to prefer it when on Bank Holiday Mondays talkSPORT used to schedule an extra edition of A Fisherman's Blues between 6-8am and an extra Weekend Sports Breakfast from 8-12noon before Football First/Matchday Live took its normal 12noon-5pm timeslot as if it was a Saturday; this arrangement changed around the time Moz Dee arrived as programme director with us now getting basically a normal weekday schedule before Matchday Live starts at 1pm. As for Danny Mills, I find him a bit non-descript to be honest. I don't find him as irritating as I do certain other recently-retired former players but he doesn't stand out as being particularly good either. For me, the Alvin Martin of Radio 5 Live is Kevin Gallacher. |

Ok thanks - that's good news then. I'd have thought finishing Fri 31st (also end of the month) would make sense. I'd seen 4-4-2's post about Danny Kelly presenting the show from next Monday earlier in the week and presumed he was speaking about from next week.
