talkSPORT had the first Manchester derby in the league during 2011/12 and in 2010/11 (their first season of holding Saturday 5.30pm and Sunday 1.30pm rights) they had rights to both Liverpool v Manchester United and that dreadful 0-0 Manchester derby played on a Wednesday night.

While Liverpool didn't have their best season last year, in commercial terms they are the league's biggest draw behind only Manchester United, so being able to do live games involving them is something that will boost talkSPORT's audience figures if nothing else.

Of their first 22 commentaries, for me their line-up starts out very strong for the first two months and only has a couple of really weak games (their first Sunday games in both October and November). Obviously all five of September's games will generate big audiences and they have a trio of Chelsea fixtures in August culminating with Newcastle's visit to Stamford Bridge. Of the less obvious big matches, Stoke City v Arsenal is always an interesting clash of styles and in Aston Villa v Norwich City you have Paul Lambert facing his former club. It might be that 5 Live have slightly more "blockbuster" matches (I haven't checked their fixture list to be perfectly honest) but talkSPORT aren't exactly short on games that either include the league's bigger clubs and/or possess interesting angles.

The Manchester derby hasn't been scheduled for TV yet (it's on the weekend of 8th/9th December).

Matchday 6 of the UEFA Champions League group stage is scheduled for 4th/5th December so one of them will be probably be playing on the Wednesday night before.

As a result the derby is unlikely to be on Saturday lunchtime and the police may request a Sunday 1.30pm kick-off (rather than a 4pm).

Does anyone know which (if any) Radio 5 Live football commentators have taken voluntary redundancy, following the decision to go from two commentators per match to just one commentator for most games next season.

Ian Dennis, in his role of football correspondent/chief football reporter, seems likely to do fewer commentaries. Darren Fletcher has 6-0-6 presenting duties, in addition to commentating, and he does some NFL. The top dogs Mike Ingham, Alan Green and John Murray are all nailed on to stay. Connor McNamara also commentates on rugby union and golf.

Perhaps Ian Brown is completely stepping down, after mainly reporting only since his return from illness. Perhaps Dave Woods and David Oates will now only be used for rugby league. Nigel Adderley is covering summer sports at the moment, so he's still around too. Perhaps John Motson will no longer commentate on 5 Live, although he would be freelance anyway.

So may be they've found a way of avoiding any redundancies, due to the flexibility of the commentary team.

I think Adderley is freelance also. Certainly his twitter account makes no mention of him being a BBC employee.

Thanks. And of course I forgot to mention Alistair Bruce-Ball, who is likely to find his commentary opportunities limited to Sport Extra next season.

I doubt it'll be the last time we hear from on the BBC. I wonder if he'll pop on Sky, talkSPORT and elsewhere over the coming months.

Oxford United v West Ham United - Nick Harris, Nathan Cooper and Peter Rhoades-Brown (7.45pm commentary)

This match is being websteamed and I don't believe it's going out on FM or DAB. With 5 Live largely moving away from the three person commentary set-up, are BBC Radio Oxford and BBC Radio Stoke the only stations who continue to use this practice?

In other news, talkSPORT will be broadcasting coverage (perhaps commentary of some sort) from the Chicago Fire v Aston Villa friendly from 1.30am on Sunday morning (or Saturday night if you prefer). Jonny Gould will be hosting from the UK with John Kreger (from Detroit's 1130 WDFN The Fan) at Toyota Park.

No, Radio Humberside and Radio Sheffield also use this format, though Radio Sheffield doesn't use it as regularly as Radio Humberside.

These updates came during Kick-Off with Danny Kelly and Matt Lawrence (the recently retired former Crystal Palace player who writes for the Guardian, this was his talkSPORT debut). I don't think they took any reports on the Great Britain v Sweden women's warm-up match earlier in the day, nor have they had updates on any of this afternoon's friendly matches.

Interesting that they were able to do on-site updates on the British men's football team's warm-up as there was some talk of stations like talkSPORT not having reporting access to Olympic events due to the deal the BBC has with the IOC. Hopefully they'll be able to do on-site updates on the Olympic football competition.

I'm slightly surprised to hear BBC Tees did commentary on the Great Britain v Brazil match - did they and/or Radio 5 Live provide any coverage of the Great Britain women's match earlier in the day?

Sunday 22nd July (early AM BST) - talkSPORT

Extra Time with Jonny Gould (in London) and John Kreger (at Toyota Park, Chicago, Illinois)

Friendly Match
Chicago Fire v Aston Villa - John Kreger (extended updates)

Apparently they weren't able to do full commentary on this one despite John K mixing updates from the ground with his usual presenting duties. I'm not sure Chicago Fire would look to restrict talkSPORT from doing commentary if they had wanted to seeing as a) the game was not televised anywhere although was a free, non-geoblocked website, b) the Chicago Fire don't actually have an English language radio partner and c) neither of the Aston Villa's local radio partners were covering this game for obvious reasons. I suspect it was more a case of talkSPORT not wanting to put off the bulk of their overnight audience who are not particularly interested in hearing full commentary on an AVFC friendly.

I've long thought Radio 5 Live Sports Extra should cover the MLS Cup Final (Major League Soccer's Super Bowl equivalent) to supplement their MLB and NFL coverage as well as 5 Live's World Football Phone-In. Perhaps doing such a game would be difficult for 5LSE to justify, so after last night's IMO successful experiment of having their US correspondent broadcasting from an MLS ground, perhaps talkSPORT could consider gaining MLS Cup rights and carrying commentary on it during Extra Time come autumn time.
