It looks as though the Real Radio sports coverage is coming to an end - at least on Real Radio Wales: http://www.realradiowales.co.uk/show...-changes/62a99
Nope, people in the North East are going mad as the Three Legends Football Phone-In on local station Real Radio North East has been cancelled.

Regarding my above post, I find it fascinating that the 3 posts on the Real Radio Wales facebook page relating to dropping the sports phone-in have a total of 8 comments, whilst the 3 post on Real Radio North East page in relation to the cancellation of their phone in have 425 comments. I can quite easily guess which show will be missed the most.

UPDATE: Real Radio Scotland has 192 comments, and going off the number of 'likes' (17,145) on the facebook page, I've worked out that roughly 2.5% of the North East listeners are talking about this change, whilst out of the 3298 people 'talking about' the page, roughly 13% are talking about the change, Why anyone should care bout this information I do not know, but here it is.

Something that had totally slipped under my radar, is Derm Tanner's departure from BBC Radio Leeds. Katherine Hannah replaces him as head of sport, but surely not also as Bradford City commentator. I think they should give that role to Adam Pope, then he'll have been the commentator for all three clubs at different times.

I wouldn't be surprised if Katherine Hannah presents the football coverage and Gareth Jones commentates on Bradford City.

The Legends on Real Radio Northeast will be missed. I listened to them sometimes. The decline in football coverage on local and regional commercial radio is a shame.

Good work on the FB stats Jimmylad.

BBC Radio Leicester

John Sinclair presenting BBC Radio Leicester Sport.

Hinckley United v Leicester City - Ian Stringer, Jason Bourne and Alan Young (commentary)

...although there were severe technical problems meaning only about 20 minutes of the second-half was broadcast.

I might be wrong but sure Gareth Jones is the new Head of sport according to his Twitter profile anyway. Hannah is just working on Sport not sure of her role.

Does anyone know the situation with the Orion Stations? In Particular Gold Coventry.. Have they still got a deal with Coventry City for their matches even though the club was relegated to League One? Cheers

Alastair Bruce-Ball is at Hampden for USA vs France

Don't think there's a reporter at every game across the tournament though.

Mark Pougatch presented. 5live also took updates from the great looking game between France and the USA with Alistair Bruce-Ball. edit: too late!

well real radio northeast and real radio scotland no longer doing phone ins, and match day shows. also bbc newcastle the only station to cover Sunderland and Newcastles games in the premier league and cups this season, surely metro might go for it now that real has gone? as for hibs can anyone confirm, just bbc scotland, now that reals gone will forth not step in?
Real Radio North East dropped commentary rights to Newcastle and Sunderland games this time last year, they were only doing the nightly phone-ins in 2011/12.

Real Radio Scotland were the only one of the three Real stations doing occasional commentaries, they had rights to 10 SPL games a year and I think they did the odd Scotland home international too. I presume they will be abandoning them as well as the phone-in should their contract have not expired anyway. Had someone like UTV Radio purchased the Real stations rather than the football-free Global group, it would have been interesting to see whether they would have continued with these SPL commentaries and, if so, which 10 games they would have opted for in the absence of Rangers and the four Glasgow derbies.

It'll also be interesting to see where the former Real Radio personalities end up. I have posted this in another thread but I see former Real Radio Scotland host Peter Martin returning to his old role on talkSPORT, where he reported on Scotland internationals and Scottish teams in European club competitions around his pitchside reporting work for Sky Sports on the SPL and Scottish Cup (presuming the latter will continue their Scottish football coverage into this season). I actually heard Peter on The Sports Bar a few weeks ago being described as "talkSPORT's Scottish football correspondent" so this looks like a cert.

With BBC Radio Scotland using umpteen summarisers each week and Clyde's Superscoreboard having a rotating team of pundits on their nightly phone-ins, I think it's safe to say that former Real pundits Alan Rough and Derek Johnstone, with their radio experience and name value, are likely to pop up on one of those platforms.

I see on the Real Radio North East Facebook page, someone using local rival Star Radio's Facebook account has posted this of the Three Legends: "Perhaps they'll appear on another station in the future?", drawing the obvious suggestions. Even if this weren't to transpire, I know Malcolm McDonald is still a very big name among Newcastle fans so may be in demand elsewhere, while Bernie Slaven has worked for talkSPORT as a pundit in the past and still pops up as a phone guest on that station these days, which might become more of a regular occurence in light of this.

As someone outside of the three affected areas, I actually think Real Radio Wales' phone-in is the biggest loss. Unlike the North East and Scotland, Welsh listeners aren't that well served when it comes to radio sports discussion programmes. Although their live coverage is IMO very good, BBC Radio Wales (and Swansea Sound for that matter) doesn't have that much in the way of sports programming around it other than rugby show Scrum V Radio. Maybe the loss of the Real Radio phone-in will be an opportunity for them to rectify this. I know last summer Mark Poyser moved from Real Radio to Radio Wales, so perhaps some of his former colleagues may follow him.

I presume Gold in the Midlands will continue all five of the clubs they did commentaries on last season. The Goalzone page of the Free Radio website hasn't changed, Tom Ross is still posting news of transfers etc involving the quintet on Twitter, where his handle reads: "The place for Villa, Blues, Baggies, Wolves and Sky Blues LIVE on Gold in the Midlands. 990am, 1017am, 1152am, 1359am and DAB".

We usually get a thread on here at this time of year where somebody speculates Orion have pulled the plug, only for it to turn out to be complete and utter bumkum.

On the subject of Coventry stations, according to the new Football Commentaries page of the BBC Sport website, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire are providing commentary on the Olympic football matches played at the City of Coventry Stadium, starting with Sweden v South Africa in the women's tournament tonight. BBC Radio Scotland have just covered USA v France. I'm not sure if these commentaries are going out on analogue and DAB or are just webstreams, I suspect the latter.

Wednesday 25th July (early AM BST) - talkSPORT

Mike Graham presented Extra Time

Friendly Match
Columbus Crew v Stoke City - John Kreger (extended updates)

I don't think talkSPORT carried reports (on-site or otherwise) on the Great Britain women's football team's match with New Zealand during Drive Time this afternoon.

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire

Clive Eakin presenting BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Sport from the City of Coventry Stadium

Olympic Women's Football Tournament Group F
Sweden v South Africa - Clive Eakin (7.45pm commentary on all platforms)

BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Olympic football commentaries are going out on their FM and DAB platforms as well as a UK-only webstream. Clive is flying solo tonight. Are BBC Radios Shropshire, Wales or Cyrmu covering Helsingborg v The New Saints in UEFA Champions League qualifying? No commentaries are listed as far as I can see but it's possible one of the three are doing updates of some kind.

What's the point of 5 Live Olympics Extra exactly? They are running a recorded show with Colin Murray when there are two football matches currently being played.

No reporters were out there for Radio Wales or Cymru, but there was updates during the Evening news.

Talksport and the BBC have both secured a 6 year deal for FA Cup and England international commentaries.

Under the deal Talksport have rights to England friendlies and not qualifiers. Not sure if there is a first pick for the FA Cup. They may just do the same games. BBC has England qualifiers on exclusive basis. Also the Talksport press release and other articles such as on Media Guardian suggest it'll be the first time they'll do FA Cup games. Not true as they had a contract between 99-02.

Actually, the Media Guardian suggests both stations can broadcast whichever FA Cup matches they choose so it seems there'll be a lot of head to heads i.e. same games on both stations

I'm delighted with the FA deal, I can listen to all games & 5Live and don't need TS. That's basically all I want!
