Mystery Dog Illness

I have a seven yr old siberian husky, for the last 3 weeks he has displayed signs of pain and distress. He is continually panting and coming to us for comfort (this is not like him as he is not a needy dog) He is eating and drinking ok. I have taken him to our vet on several occasions and he first diagnosed a pulled muscle in his back but despite resting this has not improved. On the last visit the vet said he was perplexed and was not sure what was wrong. Over the last few days his nose has started to run clear fluid also. I am taking him back tomorrow, should I insist on blood tests being done and also would you recommend I seek a second opinion. I am really worried about him.

Obviously the vet has seen him and he will know more than anyone who hasn't seen your pet.
But, the panting etc does sound like a reaction to pain that I recognise. We have had a dog with athritis and one with hip dysplaysia. both panted a lot more when suffering and came to us for comfort. I even used to get out my small electric heat pad with one of them, and he enjoyed the relief the heat gave him, would lie still for ages with the pad on his hip.
If your husky has damaged a muscle, it would take a while to heal. It's hard keeping them quieter while that happens and not letting them run around as usual. It should help though in the long run.
I'd ask the vet about clear discharge, in my experience such things don't always mean a problem. But better safe than sorry. I hope your dog feels better soon.

Mollies first sign of her back hurting last year was panting and seeking us for comfort. She was on painkillers for 3 weeks and very strict rest, just slowly building up to going for walks etc as she got better.
