Removing a TWAIN source
I have recently changed my ancient Epson All-in-One Printer for a modern one (SX445W). I often scan things to PDF, and to do this I normally use Scan Assistant, which gives much more flexibility than just scanning using the printer's front panel.
I have a slight irritation, in that, when I call up Scan Assistant it insists on asking me which scanner I want to use, the old Epson or the new one, even though, as far as I know, the old one's software has been removed. I cannot find any way of removing the old one so that it ceases to ask me and just gets on with it as it did before I installed the new one. Not critical, just an irritation, and I don't want to start messing with anything difficult like the Registry, but has anyone any idea how I can do this please? I am using Vista and cannot find anything in the Control Panel which refers to the old printer (or scanner). |

Have you uninstalled Epson Scan aswell? I believe the TWAIN drivers came with that.

Not specifically as I let the install system do its own thing, but looking at the Install/Uninstall page in Control Panel shows Epson Scan as a 2012 install. However, Scan Assistant still shows as a 2008 install.
I don't want to risk losing Scan Assistant by trying to uninstall/reinstall it because it is so useful. Probably best to leave well alone as it is only one, albeit irritating, step that would be saved on each job. |

Have you had a look in Control Panel>Devices and Printers to see if the old printer is still shown?
If so, right click on it and choose Remove Device and that should prevent the choice of the old printer being given. |

If I knew for certain what I was doing, then perhaps, but I don't. If someone tells me that a particular list will contain a facility to delete the old scanner's entry, then that would be fine, but I am not so keen when it is a matter of "maybe", and would prefer to leave well alone.

I realised that Scan Assistant wasn't actually doing anything useful, it was just passing control over to Epson Scan. So I risked uninstalling Epson Scan, which I knew I should be able to reinstall.
It immediately reaslised that I had a scanner with no software (because it must have removed the TWAIN driver as well) and searched for software to install. I put the original disk in and it installed the driver again, but not Epson Scan (don't know why). So I downloaded Epson Scan from the web site and installed it and now it is running without asking which scanner I want to use. Doing it wasn't without its problems, but I got there in the end. Phew.... |
