One possible solution might be something like this..

http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/externa...e/goflex-home/

I've got one plugged into my router at home. It comes with software that you install on each computer that does a number of things. First of all each computer can be created as a separate user of the drive with their own login. It creates three new "drives", one common area for all users and one private area that only the specific user can see and a back-up "drive" for each user.

It also installs a fairly basic but usable back-up program that sits in the background quietly copying stuff to the network drive. It doesn't seem to slow down either of my machines noticeably and does a reasonable job of backing up the important bits.

It also has a USB port for additional storage. I have a USB drive hooked up and use the on-board facilities of the Seagate drive to copy the back-ups over to the USB drive periodically so I have two separate versions if I ever need them.

I am sure there are better solutions out there but having got this drive I would say that it is pretty easy to set-up and use for even a non-techie type of person.
