Interesting to see if this has many/any implications for the PS3 or if it will mainly be focused on the next machine.
Theoretically the PSVita could/should benefit too. |

With this acquisition Sony seem well placed for next generation now, they should be able to have games delivered via Disc, Downloads and Steaming. To me Cloud seems to idea rental service, I really don't like the idea of buying Cloud games though. |

The naysayers will be the ones without the bandwidth to make full use of cloud gaming, and rightly so. All Sony need to do now is spend billions on bringing the worlds internet up to speed then cloud gaming will be a reality for everybody, they can start at my house.

Buying from cloud isn't that much different than buying from Steam or even PSN/XBLA.

It's going to take a long long time to have every country where gaming is big to have everyone have access to internet that can rule out some problems, some won't ever be ruled out.. Quote:
It's completely different. When you download a game of steam say it takes 4 hours, and it's on computer now nothing is dependent on internet now. With services like this It will always be dependent on your internet. |

The big difference is if the network goes down (Like PSN hack last year) you lose access to all you games with a Cloud system. Whereas with STEAM or PSN you only lose access to anything not downloaded so you can still play a few games.

Never quite thought of it like that... to much of an optimist! Anyway going on Sony's history with PSN I don't think many would buy into a Sony run Cloud gaming system.

The Difference with the cloud system is that you are only getting what is essentially a video stream with a return path,so to Hack the system they would have to access the servers via other means

I like the idea of this I'm just not sure how it'll turn out. I don't have particularly fast internet because of where I live (I'm not sure on actual figures) and I only have a 40GB download limit per month so would these prevent me from getting the full experience when it does get made available or is this not really known at this early stage?

But if we look at things already available, iPlayer needs about 3mb to stream HD content, an hours worth of streaming will use approximately 1gb of data. So assuming those same type of requirements are the same for streaming gaming videos from a cloud server you would need a connection faster then 3mb and with your 40gb data allowance you would be able to game for 40hours a month if gaming was all you used you connection for. |

Digital distribution is one thing, and even that's not everyone's cup of tea as there's a lot of gamers this gen who refuse to buy something off XBLA or PSN. I'm personally fine with not owning a manual or game case so long as I can play offline, own the game on my HDD, can back it up to an external device and re-download it from the server at will as I can with XBL. Cloud gaming offers none of this, it takes all the freedom of gaming away. Even in a perfect word it's a horrible thing imo. |

For me the worrying thing is problems like the PSN hack. Cloud gamers would have had access to nothing in that situation, DD gamers would have had access to only what they have downloaded before the situation arose (Under the current system, I like you idea of external back-up but cant see companies been happy with this due to piracy risks), while disc gamers had access to everything they owned. The other worry for me is what if Sony goes out of business. It was only a few years ago when the PS3 was struggling that we kept hearing stories about how Sony was about to do a SEGA. Even in recent times with Sonys financial worries we have stories about them not been able to afford PS4 and them been a doomed company. All those possibilities leave me wonder where you would stand should a network provider like Sony, Microsoft or Valve go under, what happens to the hundreds possible thousands of pounds worth of games you buy from the Cloud or digitally? At least the discs I own for my Dreamcast still worked when SEGA went under. |

External backup is a feature that should be allowed for all DD. Piracy shouldn't be a concern as the games are only useable on the console it was downloaded from/or the gamertag it is assigned to. I've backed up most of my XBLA content to my PC HDD. I'm quite sure PSN also makes this possible. Personally speaking I hope MS don't follow suit here and buy out OnLive or something, I think we are up to 10 years too early for this kind of technology to be truly usable and stable for serious gaming. |

Onlive have made no promise and said they can not promise compatibility with games, in 5 years. Most gamers will go to lot of effort if needed to play there classic games, I can't see these big companies going to as much effort. That to me is horrible future, imagine in 10 years time and 5 years ago the best game ever had been released and you could not go back and play it. Gaming is really starting to not have very bright future.

That is why I think it will work like this.
You'll have the PS Store as you already know it. You'll purchase a game. You'll have two options. If you've good speed, but not blazing, you'll stream it. If you've blazing speed, you can download it locally. So if you're worried about not having something once they go tit up - you'll download it. And of course physical media will always compliment it until the other nations get blazing speeds. Sony have already said the world isn't ready for a disc-less console and the PS4 will not be disc-less. I reckon we'll see 3 variants. PS4. PS4 Slim and then a PS4 Super Slim which will be released when the world is super-connected and be disc-less. |

I'm absolutely certain that whatever happens there will be a market for old games, so playing your favorite title in 10yrs time won't be an issue. What Onlive say and what Sony do can't be compared. As for all this Cloud stuff, sounds like bollocks to me, people who support such a weak and prone to interuption service should be shot. In a world where cyber attacks are becoming more and more widespread, putting our trust in a 100% online servive is nothing short of MADNESS!
