What is the latest on You view? How long does the trial last for? and how are the results fed back to Youview?

Nothing. They're not due.

Seems strange that the news conference didn't happen at the start of the trial - there was always going to be leaks to the media and it looks like that has started :

The user interface isn't like the original Project Canvas UI when first shown. In fact, it looks pretty ordinary. Shame.

You have to hope that is not the intended UI which Humax plan to ship, it looks so oversimplified it is lacking basic features, like favourites.

No favourites?

Even my HDR-FOX T2 offers that functionality, also Humax.

That looks cool, I can see people springing £200 for that.

YouView unveiled and retail debut confirmed

Jul 4 by YouView_Press

YouView, the new set top box offering subscription-free digital TV and catch-up, launched today and will be available in major retailers by the end of July. The venture’s Chairman, Lord Sugar, and CEO Richard Halton, made the announcement while unveiling the unique YouView box and user experience.

Lord Sugar described “a great moment in British television” and Halton added “YouView is easy to use and seamlessly combines the worlds of catch up and live TV, on the living room TV.”

The easy-to-use set top box is set to transform how UK viewers consume TV. You can take advantage of more than 100 digital TV and radio channels, seven day catch-up and on demand programmes from the content libraries of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 - all delivered to the viewer’s main TV.

YouView features an innovative electronic programme guide (EPG) that allows users to scroll back seven days to catch-up on programmes they’ve missed. You can watch in HD and record, pause and rewind live TV. Easy-to-use search lets you find on-demand content by programme or even actor’s name.

Backed by some of Britain’s biggest names in TV and broadband - the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Arqiva, BT and TalkTalk - YouView brings a fully integrated service to homes across the country via a broadband internet connection, television aerial and a YouView set top box.

YouView will be available in two ways; from retailers, with no further TV subscription, or from an ISP as part of a phone and broadband package. Retail partners already signed up include John Lewis, Currys, Comet, Argos, Amazon, Richer Sounds and the Euronics group. BT and TalkTalk will announce their packages soon and from launch they will offer additional content and services to customers accessing YouView via their broadband networks.

The YouView proposition will constantly evolve and following expressions of interest from over 300 potential content partners, YouView will soon have a range of quality content available from content partners including Sky’s Now TV and STV. A formal enrolment process for content partners was also launched today.

Lord Sugar, Chairman of YouView states: “It’s with great pleasure that we announce that YouView will be available from major retailers later this month. Our intention with this simple–to-use box is to provide extraordinary TV for everyone, with on-demand services combined with TV channels with an opportunity to search back an entire week to catch what they’ve missed. It’s a whole new way of experiencing TV.”

Richard Halton, CEO of YouView adds, “Today, YouView is being enjoyed in over 2,000 homes and the feedback from the trial is very encouraging. It confirms that YouView is easy to set up and use and different to what has gone before. In many ways we’ve only just begun, YouView is set to evolve quickly and we look forward to working with new content partners and developing more functionality as boxes roll out into UK homes.”

Real shame we don't have a private Forum to discuss this product..

Forthcoming HD box from Pace should offer YouView functionality alongside BT's on-demand services and linear channels.

BT's AGM next week so expect an announcement, even if just more details on likely launch date, then. Quite sensibly, they don't want to dampen uptake of existing product at the moment by revealing too much, too soon.

I have a lot to say !
I would guess you are not the only one, the private forum would be great. Have you sent them any feedback messages and get a good reply?

I would guess the software on the unit you have been loaned is expected to be the final software, warts and all!

Surely now that its officially launched and screenshots etc.. are on the YouView official website then you'd be able to discuss it?

I'm quite surprised that the box doesn't come with WiFi, especially as it relies heavily on internet. I already have a set of powerline adaptors connecting the PC in my bedroom to the internet from the router in the living room. I don't fancy buying yet another set which would mean connecting an additional homeplug to my router (if I have enough sockets available)

I wonder if those of us who were not picked for the YouView trial, will be offered a discount on the price of a box?,after all they know where we are.

I am also a little confused,at the moment,as to if a pair of Homeplugs will be included in the retail package.

I doubt it very much. Not everyone needs them.

Yes, not included "Or if it's in a different room you might prefer a powerline adapter, which you can buy from your nearest electrical retailer." http://www2.youview.com/how-it-works/

Hopefully later versions will have WiFi built in, it's a bit of a pain using an ethernet cable for any distance and people may not have a spare power socket to put the powerline adaptor in.
