Brand X with Russell Brand - Sky Atlantic

Checked the listings and noticed this starts tonight. Shot in the USA, it's a weekly topical talk show fronted by Brand where he discusses the week's goings on and probably discusses aspects of his life too.

I like Brand and so i'll give it a watch and see if its any good. Anyone else be watching?

Critical viewers suggest it's not that good, boderline awkward at times. but it has potential depending on what's in the news and whether Brand has anything funny to say about it.

Russell Brand is the unfunniest person around. I won't be watching.

Well thanks for that

Moving on ..

I'm a fan of Russell's and I have been for a long time, but I just found this quite difficult to watch. Maybe it was the subject matter but i found it a bit tedious and not that funny.

I stuck it out but eventually turned it off 5 minutes before the end. I'll still watch the rest of them because I don't expect they'll all be like this.

Watched this last night and pretty much enjoyed it. Russell Brand doesn't half ramble on and i get the feeling he's filmed different bits discussing his topic and it's all been stitched together without any thought as it was all over the place.

Starts off discussing Dalai Lama then talks about American spirituality and ends with big tit hiccup porn! Best bits were the photo of his driver Mick with Usher and the funniest part was when he went upto that bloke in the audience and dissed his hair, but the whole thing was ruined by the show cutting away to him rambling on again and we didn't get to hear what the bloke said afterwards.

I did laugh when i noticed the whole of the front row were all young 20/30-something women! Why am i not surprised lol typical Brand!

I'm not particularly a fan of Russell Brand, though I did get dragged along into seeing him live a couple of years ago and to be honest he was very funny.
Brand X didn't work though, the audience was far too small, they rarely laughed and there was no atmosphere. He needed a bigger audience and a studio setting.

i think Brand is very funny and this show wasn't very good. i hope it gets better.

i think it was a clash of culture. i think the anodyne networks and anarchic brand combined to give the worst of both worlds.

I usually enjoy Russell, but found this a bit disappointing.

He seemed to think the US audience needed words such as "narrative" defined for them. I don't recall him ever being that patronising for a UK crowd.

It's almost like he's doing a US version of "Ponderland". That did have some good moments so I hope this does improve.

he is and i don't think it's particularly patronising. it's just making sure that everyone can follow what he's saying.

It was a wierd show, I quite like Russel Brand but it just seemed like he was talking at a group of people to show how clever he is.

I liked it. Brand is a very smart, very well-read man, whether you enjoy his humour or not. Did take about five minutes for me to warm to it, but after that I was pretty much hooked. I don't agree with most of what he was saying but I enjoyed how he made his points, and when he did crack a joke I generally found it very funny.

But, it's not exactly Carry On - if you (a) don't like Russell Brand and (b) aren't particularly interested in philosophical discussion, this isn't going to convince you about either.

I actually thought it would be terrible so this is a pleasant surprise for me.

I'm a big Russel Brand fan but this just left me cold. He seemed to focus on sounding clever instead of trying to make us laugh... He's usually funny and clever but in this I found him dull and patronising. Really disapointed!

I'll carry on watching though, hopefully we'll see a bit of the old Russel later on.

Second episode was considerably better than the first. Man's a genius.

I think people are missing the point somewhat about what sort of show this is. I hesitate to use the term, but I think it's actually quite highbrow. It isn't going to be to everyone's taste but I actually appreciate watching a show where someone chooses to be intelligent first and funny second.

Comedy is an incredibly partial thing and there aren't many people who appreciate the entire broad stroke of comedy ranging from slapstick to satire. You're going to struggle to understand his jokes if you don't understand what he's talking about. Nor should you have to!

Education is a wonderful thing but I don't think it should be a prerequisite to watch an entertainment show. You're well within your rights to call it unfunny and turn your back on it. I personally didn't enjoy The Mighty Beast.

Horses for courses.

Kind of irrelevant, but did you mean The Midnight Beast or The Mighty Boosh?

Mighty Boosh is great so I must have meant the Midnight Beast - poor man's Flight of the Conchords.

The show was mediocre, but the band themselves are only responsible for the songs (the part of the show most people including myself liked) not the writing. I think it's one of those shows that takes a while to get into the spirit of things, so I wouldn't judge it on one episode alone.

I find the idea that there is a "band" funny. Never say never. I stopped watching after ten minutes, rounding up, but I'll look at subsequent episodes to see if they change the tired attempts at comedy.

I may not be the target audience. I'm probably twice that age.

Don't care if you lose me as a viewer.

It may be the show.

It may be the scheduling.

It may just be me.

This is a very patronising post.

It's all very well being "intelligent first and funny second" but he completely forgot about the funny part!! I love Russel Brand but he disappears up his arse when he's on the subject of spirituality. It was almost preachy.

I agree with you about the second episode though, a big improvement on the first. Thank goodness! I'd hate for him to become someone I didn't like, he's one of my favourite people!!

I love Russell Brand and was very disappointed at the first episode. Because it was him I watched the second episode and was very pleased that I did, a great improvement on the first.

Watched the 2nd episode as well and for the large part, i didn't find it that funny, but i started to enjoy it towards the end - when he was burning the pound coin it was certainly silly enough to get me laughing ..
