O.m.d
After their greatest hits popped up on my ipod today I decided to downloaded a few of their old albums (Architecture/Dazzle Ships).
Loving both of these albums, especially Dazzle Ships, which feels a bit like the British cousin of Kraftwerk's Radio-activity. Anyone else on here a fan? |

From 1980 to 1982 they were good, but after that they went a bit meh.

If you listen closely to "Electricity", it's Kraftwerk's "Radio-Activity" speeded-up. Andy McCluskey admitted as much to Ralf Hutter when he met him, and Ralf's reply was "Yes ...ve know..."

I enjoy their later stuff - History of Modern and Sugar Tax are pretty good, Liberator not so.
They're one of those bands I think, that a singles collection IS actually the Best Of. |

The early period is great - from the first album to Dazzle Ships. After that they went a bit soft.
I did like Sugar Tax, though. |

I have been a fan since the Dazzle Ships time, but yeah... from O.M.I.T.D. - Dazzle Ships was their creative peak then it was all pop although there were a few tracks along the way that were good just not as good as those first 4 albums! Liberator is generally acknowledged as their worst album

Their new album due next year supposedly has some Dazzle Ships type moments on it.
They are headlining Flashback and Rewind festivals next month, if you get a chance to see them live - do it, they are an amazing live band! |

I never noticed the similarity tbh. In fact, after reading your post, I had to play Radio-Activity with my finger on the fast forward button to try and establish a connection between the two songs and maybe I'm just being thick but I still can't hear it myself.

Great band, didn't like the music when Paul Humphreys left though.
Forever Live & Die is their last favourite song for me |

Think they were torn between making electronic pop songs for the UK market, and more adult pop for the US. I really liked 'If You Leave' which was their big American single, but flopped here.
I bought Dazzle Ships at the time, and remember being a bit disappointed by it (although I loved 'Romance Of The Telescope'). It got panned by the critics, and the band quickly went back to the commercial sound of 'Locomotion' and the Junk Culture album, and that's where the rot started I guess as they lost their confidence with that more experimental sound. Bought the Greatest hits CD & DVD recently, and it's a great reminder of how good they were. |

I think it's bold and daring, although it doesn't quite work as a concept; it's not quite coherent enough and at least on a cursory listen it sounds like OMD have just been having fun with the BBC sound effects department. |

It's not a direct lift but if you listen to the sustained 'drone' on "Electricity", behind the plinky-plink riff, and imagine it slowed down I think that's where the similarity is.
I found the original source for McLuskey's comments by the way: http://www.mojo4music.com/blog/2009/...entranced.html I'm really into the Dazzle Ships album at the moment, though I can totally understand why it bombed but it's an inspired confection of wrist slashing melancholy, fluffy synth-pop, interspersed with Cold War inspired radio samples. Though I have to say, favourite OMD track at the moment is Sacred Heart, kind of reminds me a bit of Duran Duran's The Chauffeur but this is a bit more depressing. Actually, I'm surprised just how miserable OMD's music is, I'd have never have guessed from the singles collections. |

Their first two albums were really good. Saw them live in the early 80's during the 'organization' tour and they put on a really good show...............'Messages' is one of my favourite records.
After that, i'm afraid it went downhill as far i'm concerned....shame really. |

Dazzle Ships is confusing (but interesting), but Architecture and Morality is amazing and probably a good starting point. When they were good they were very, very good. Maid of Orleans is a particular favourite.

thanks for posting that interview, it was interesting to read his take on the whole synth-pop movement and his views on Kraftwerk.

Junk Culture is a lot more mainstream but there are some superb melodic songs on it. |

I list OMD as one of my fav 80s bands. But I tend to agree - the hits good; the album tracks, in the main, less so.

I loved OMD up until Sugar Tax, then I went off them. I loved the first three albums but found Dazzle Ships a lot harder to get into.
That said, I went to see the Dazzle Ships tour in the Glasgow Apollo and thought it was fantastic. I still have the tour programme somewhere... |

Saw them at Rewind, first time although I was a fan back in the day. Although they were always one of the acts I was most looking forward to, they surprised me by how great they are live! They certainly won some new fans around where I was.
