California restaurant owners had until midnight to legally sell foie gras to customers seeking the French delicacy. Sunday, a state law signed in 2004 that bans producing or selling the fatty goose or duck liver achieved by force feeding goes into effect, and violators will be slapped with a $1,000 fine.

As the days counted down to the ban, restaurant owners said they saw an increase in sales from customers looking to enjoy their last legal taste. "We have people asking for fois gras on their French fries, on their eggs on their sushi," said Pedro Lorencillo, general manager at Chaya Brasserie in San Francisco.

The sale and production of foie gras, which is goose liver pâté, has now been banned in the US state of California on humane treatment of animals grounds. This is because the geese concerned are force fed via the process of gavage so that they produce extra large and tasty livers for human consumption.

I once saw a TV documentary about this force feeding and it showed food being forced down a conical shute into the goose's beak and it frankly looked pretty appalling. I'm certainly not going to miss it as I've never tasted any in the first place.

Me too, got a can in the cupboard that I bought when I visited my Mum in France last October. Not as good as the decent stuff they have in all the shops there at Christmas but yummy all the same.

It's an absolute disgrace banning it. What are they going to ban next?

I tried it once but found the texture disgusting - sort of like a large lump of almost set jelly, it made me retch.

Vile stuff, evilly produced and enjoyed by people who only like it because it's meant to be a 'delicacy' and expensive (like caviar)

Lots of farming is cruel, egg production is far worse than what happens with foie gras, do you think eggs should be banned?

Foie Gras has a very unique taste, I don't like much offal but then it doesn't taste like any other offal i've tried.

Oh that's not true, I think it tastes divine, that's why i like it. Snob value doesn't come into it. On the continent it's eaten a lot more widely by a very broad set of people.

I completely disagree. Seared foie gras for me is one of the greatest tasting things out there.

Absolutely fantastic news. Great to see it banned- I don't eat meat anyway but before I became vegetarian I avoided this by-product of cruelty like the plague.

Don't you think people should have a choice?

Like i say, most people who slam foie gras as cruel wouldn't think twice about eating eggs.

I don't eat eggs so feel more able to comment on this.

No, I don't think in this instance choice is needed- it's cruetly for the sake of luxury, which I disagree with.

Fair enough. But they should definitely ban eggs or at least the way they are produced if they feel so strongly.

Battery eggs have pretty much been phased out now.

I dont know about the eggs used in prepackaged foods like pasta and mayonaise, but most eggs sold in supermarkets are free range (they dont have the egg forcefully removed from them either)

As Daisy says, most eggs are free-range these days and although a lot could be done to improve the conditions in which even free-range chickens are kept, it's nothing compared to the cruelty involved in the production of fois gras. You really can't compare the two.

Not all forms of egg production should be banned but some forms yes. While even free range is not great, its better then foie gras

Edit: I see a few people have made the same point.

Is there not a more ethical foie gras these days? One that doesn't involve a funnel and corn?
