Hi everyone! I didn't get a chance to post after Friday's episode, so here's my take on it:
I was looking forward to it so much that I suspect even the most exciting and groundbreaking episode would have fallen short in my eyes! I was expecting too much!
It did seem very wobbly without Tracy, but I think her absence was heightened due to the fact that Mike and Gina hardly appeared. It's focus was solely on the kids and especially Faith. I felt it was a bit of a mistake giving her such a prominent role from the start since the audience weren't familiar with her. I think if Mike and Gina had been more present, it would have had a ring of familiarity to it that was missing. Plus Tracy was so central to every storyline because we often saw the children and their issues through her eyes. In the Story of Tracy Beaker, the focus was very much on the children and their perspective, The move to TBR meant we got to see things through Tracy the careworker's eyes. The dumping ground has sort of reverted back to the focus on the kids! Plus the fact that Tracy was such an iconic character always getting in trouble with Mike etc has left a very big hole.
Moving on from Tracy though, it was striking how old everyone has got! Gus was my favourite, but he just doesn't work anymore! Mainly because if Gus is going to grow up physically and break his voice etc, why is he still being portrayed in the same clothes and the same behaviour? They should let Gus grow up mentally as well. Why does he always wear the exact same clothes every day? Surely this can't be explained away with Asperger's?
Gus the kid being played by Gus the teenager is not the best idea! I can see why the actor felt it was time for him to leave. For example, during series 1 and 2 of TBR, Liam also grew up quite dramatically. He changed a lot and his voice broke etc. But Liam changed mentally too, as a character. This is why Liam the teenager worked where Gus' isn't.
It's also a shame that Sapphire isn't there anymore as she was fantastic. I really hate Elektra lol..
All that said, I think the series has real potential. Once we get used to the change of perspective, I'm sure the issues affecting the kids will be dealt with more seriously. I would love to see how Johnny deals with his mother returning for instance.
By the way, I agree that Johnny's accent is very northern, whilst Tee's isn't. It is a bit unrealistic given that they're brother and sister!
