Presumably because you already updated them using the out of date firmware.

If you install the optional telnet package it can greatly help in analysing problems.

No - On the HDR?

This is a problem with the laprop settings.

Can you change the network type to PRIVATE on XP for your home network connection and check that file and printer sharing is enabled..

hi guys

finally got home and access to the computers

I have reset my sons laptop to private network

Network discovery is on
filesharing is listed as custom even though i clicked the on icon
public folder sharing and printer sharing are both switched to on (password required) which i can see no way of altering

i can now see my laptop on the network map but cant add the networked printer or the foxsat by any methods

Im stumped

This should be easy.

1. Samba must be running on the HDR for the computer name FOXSAT-HDR to be known,
2. You should have all computers (Including the Foxsat) in the same workgroup (or domain)
3. To see a compuer is must have resources which are shared and it must be in a private network.
4. A network Printer must also be shared and turned on.
5. You network needs to have been setup connectly - Using a single DHCP server (normally on your router) will ensure this.
6. The windows network periodically searches for hosts and devices. Normally when a host starts it will broadcast it's existance. You should always be able to connect to samba (if it is running) if you know the correct ip address and share name e,g, \192.168.1.5\Media
You can enter this by using the Windows map network drive function and manually entering the string even if a search does not show it.

It is. all other laptops/pc can see it

They are (see above)

It is in a private network and the recources are as per my previous post
4. A network Printer must also be shared and turned on.

it is, i deleted it from my laptop and then reinstalled it, followed the exact same procedure on my sons and it wouldnt find it

5. You network needs to have been setup connectly - Using a single DHCP server (normally on your router) will ensure this.

pretty sure i have this
the setting for the laptop (acer 15) is
:acer15 192.168.1.8 00-19-D2-65-B1-4D Auto
6. The windows network periodically searches for hosts and devices. Normally when a host starts it will broadcast it's existance. You should always be able to connect to samba (if it is running) if you know the correct ip address and share name e,g, \192.168.1.5\Media

I will try the direct route as above but i am 90% sure i have done this and it hasnt worked
I am pretty sure its a in depth network problem on the computer settings some where

The network printer - If it is attached to a PC and the wizard fails to find it - you should be able to browse with the wizard, select the host, and then you should see any shared printer.

If you now see your PC on your sons laptop it should see the Foxsat - try the manual method.

If samba is currently running then my guess would be laptop firewall or the network connection being used is not private.

the network is definately set to private
I will have a look at the firewall
what would the prog that needed to be let through the firewall?

I would guess theis is a TCP port setting - I did not catch what operating sytem and firewall you use - I assume Windows something?

p.s. Can that - still tell me what about your systems but if you can see one you should be able to see the other.
Did my suggestion with the printer work?

regarding the printer
no matter what i do ( compared to the other pc's on the network) I cant get access to it
I have used the wizard
i have typed in the printer"address" as per my laptop
but no joy

the system with my sons laptop is windows vista home premium service pack 2

i have switched off the firewall ( both avg and windows, though i think only avg is running) and using the ip address as the shortcut
i still get file not found

when i go to add application in firewall i cant see samba or anything
is there a prog i should add to let it through, i cant see any obvious prog

As a network protection tool (free) I would recommend the Microsort security essentails (or something like that) very integrated

One is going via your browser to mongoose and the other from Windows to samba using different tcp/ip ports.
If your other PC sees and can access samba on the Foxsat without problem then something on is preventing this laptop from doing so. Are they running the same Windows versions?

vista should be fine. Running out of ideas here - are all upates / service packs applied?
If you share a video, for example, on another PC can your sons laptop access it?

well good news, abd news and very bad news

very bad news, my laptops hard drive decided to implode so I had to get the IT chap in ( and lost an awful lot of data)

good news, he sorted the network problem, there was a setting to do with workgroups that had been switched off. once he found it it took 2 secs to sort out

bad news. the humax keeps losng its settings
i have loaded the latest(?) software on it and when it boots it says custom firmware 4.07 and all is dandy- for a day or so
Then it loses the settings.
When i went to check today it just said boot on load up ( no custom firmware 4.07). Obviously no network access.

reload the software and all is well agin...... until the next time.
is there a setting on the box that allows it to update itself and thus lose its setting?

confused as ever!

You need to update the custom firmware to 4.0.8 to match the latest firmware 1,0.21
