I like the idea of the bird naming scheme. What about a domestic cat naming scheme? You could have Mac OS XI Top Cat, Alley Cat, Tabby Cat, Ginger Cat, Moggy, Tom Cat, Kitten, Black Cat...

If I don't see any in a shop I might get that one. I might have a look in a toy shop but I doubt they'll have one. I found it hard to get a Snow Leopard toy but I managed to get one out of the blue. He sits on my bed never seen another one since. If it comes with Lion I'll buy a Lion toy and they're easy to get in any toy shop.

It's rare that you'll get the machine cheaper from a 3rd party than from the Apple Store itself as Apple tightly control their prices.

The best you can usually hope for is a del on extended warranties & the like

OS upgrades are not simply about readily noticeable UI changes. Mountain Lion brings over 1700 APIs and over 200 new features and Show Leopard to Lion brought over 3,000 APIs and over 300 new features. I wouldn't see it as a revamp at all.

I've found various sites that claim that certain features won't work on older hardware and I think this is something Apple need to be a bit more upfront about. People will be disappointed if they find that their 2009 MacBook Pro won't support mirroring or some other feature they've been looking forward to.

I do know, because I own them both, that the iPhone 4 does not support mirroring, but the iPad 2 from the following year does. It all seems to be to do with the GPU.

I agree that Apple needs to be clearer on what will and what will not work. As for total incompatibility if I were Apple I would offer credits or discounts for those with 2009 machines that can not upgrade. I think that would be fair.

On the phone/tablet side that's a bit harder to justify as the pace of hardware improvement and change with smartphones is much faster and more dramatic than it is with computers. In other words smart phones have a much shorter lifespan when it comes to software upgrade compatibility.

My original iPad is a perfect example. After two plus years it has already run into substantial roadblocks of what it can do with newer software and in fact will not be compatible at all with iOS 6 coming in the fall. My 2008 iMac, on the other hand, will still be compatible with Mountain Lion.

The rumours were bang on - Tim Cook has just confirmed that Mountain Lion will launch tomorrow.

(Apple's Q3 earnings conference call is happening right now)

Tomorrow?! I'm eligible for a free upgrade with my new Air but I won't bother, at least not straight away. Who here is gonna be an early Mountain Lion adopter? Oh and can we try and keep all ML discussion to this thread?

Yeah, tomorrow. If the update goes live at the beginning of the business day in the US then it should be available from around lunchtime on this side of the pond.

I'll probably update. I like the direction they've been taking OS X in (although I do understand the reservations some have), plus I'll always have the option of going back to Lion as that's what my iMac shipped with.

If you're not going to update straight away then remember you've only got 30 days (from the launch of ML) to claim your free update.

I saw that mentioned somewhere the other day. Can you claim the free update but not install it?

You could download it anyway. You don't have to install it until you want.

I never thought of that. I thought you had to install it when you downloaded it.

According to Wikipedia, Puma was the codename for OS X 10.1, but it was only used internally by Apple. But also according to Wkipedia, The cougar [is] also known as puma, mountain lion, mountain cat, catamount or panther. So Apple has already used three names for the same animal: Puma, Panther and Mountain Lion.

Time for Jungle Cat methinks?
He looks more like your domestic moggy:
