Over 50% of PCs run Windows 7
50.2% of PCs are running Windows 7. It overtook XP in the Autumn of 2011.
Meanwhile Windows 8 will be out this Autumn and has all the hallmarks of being a huge failure like Vista ![]() http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/02/s...dows-7-top-OS/ |

, 2 Windows 7 laptops, a Windows XP desktop from 2003, an XP laptop from 2004 with a broken screen, another XP laptop from the same year about to be used as a Linux box (my old one), an iPad and an old Windows 2000 box. There's also a 1987 DOS laptop lying around somewhere which no longer works but is kept purely for nostalgia reasons

Well last month I finally installed Windows 7 (Ultimate, 64 bit) having resisted for as long as I could. But for processor intensive video work, my beloved Windows XP simply isn't anywhere near as fast as Win 7 64 bit with extra memory (70% difference on 64 bit programs!) so I am now running a dual boot system and am slowly migrating programs over to Windows 7. I have always kept my data off drive C: so it's easy to share it between the two O/Ss
Migrating Outlook has been the hardest to do, so far but overall I am pleased with how it's going and I have absolutely no intention of moving to Windows 8 for many years and probably never. I reckon my 2 year old Athlon 964 quad core stystem will be good for years to come, perhaps until Windows 10 comes along... may eventually need a better cooler though to overclock it. |

No one knows how windows 8 will do, it is not for me i have tried it and can't get on with the metro start screen, and as of yet I have not heard anyone apart from people on here that have any thing nice to say about windows 8, most of these people have used it, I myself for over a week as my main OS.
If people are forced into windows 8 when they buy a new computer then it will do well, but if people have the down grade option then it may not. i am pretty sure that stores and shopping channels will push it onto people, just like they did with Windows 7. Vista was a bit hit and miss, if you had the hardware to run it then it was fine, but the main problem was incompatibility, which by the time Windows 7 came out most was solved. The problem I had with vista was defender, a pain in the neck and if you disabled it, things got worse. Once I paid for internet install and other stuff, I am going to save up and go for a Apple Mac. |

Vista's downfall was they completely changed the driver model so people with older kit couldn't get the required drivers to move onto the new platform and since it was more than a few lines change to support the new vista driver model alot of companies just didn't bother upgrading them for stuff no longer on sale so people stayed with what they had

I would suggest that this reflects that the majority of web surfing is done by home users who will naturally tend to use newer PCs and thus more likely to have Windows 7. The many millions of PCs in industry and commerce still running Win XP, or older, will be under-represented in these numbers as they spend less time web surfing. |

I certainly won't be getting Windows 8 this Autumn, I've not long had Windows 7 and this laptop. I'll wait a year and a half before getting Windows 8.

How? W7 seems to be better than Vista from what I've heard. My dad reckons Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. He's happily been using W7 for two years.
I don't know, but they hate it and I'm sure they would need a Vista exorcist to get rid of it for them ![]() Quote:

I must be responsible for about 100 installations of Windows. Apart from a handful of virtual machines kept for testing purposes there aren't any which run Vista. There are still a handful running XP for legacy reasons but almost all of the desktops and laptops are running Windows 7 - even some 6 year boxes cope well with it. I'm sure Windows 8 will do well on tablets but I don't know anyone who is planning to deploy it on the desktop. |

Vista was a good operating system after SP1. Unfortunately its reputation was too badly damaged at that point. W7 is much better though.

Windows 7 really is what Vista should have been. Microsoft took a few years to fix Vista's numerous shortcomings through Service Packs. Windows 7 is really a close relative of Vista and Microsoft learned some hard lessons. You can look on Windows 8 as brave or foolish. I guess time will tell...... |
