Picnic At Hanging Rock

Anyone else a fan of this?

I recently re-watched it after not seeing it for a good few years.
Very strange, almost hypnotic movie set in the early 1900s about a school trip to Hanging Rock in Australia. A few of the schoolgirls climb the rock and vanish into thin air.
The movie touches on sexuality, fear and mis-trust.

I imagine most young people hating this for being boring, but i find it very intriguing and always leaves me pondering on it for a while afterwards.

I saw it years ago, and would like to see it again. I read the book as well, which was also good.

I think the events are rumoured to be based on real events, but there has never actually been any proof that anything like that happened.

Yeah, i was reading up on the true story yesterday and to be honest there isn't much of one.
It all seems like a bit of myth and hear'say.

I'd like to read the book myself.

the weird atmosphere depicted in the film of Hanging Rock is spot on.....the place feels as weird as the film portrays it! Aborignals won't go anywhere near it and there is no birdsong.....

Great film - very unsettling and, well, 'weird'! Really enjoyed it though.

Terrific early film from Peter Weir that achieves a lot more than some of his later efforts that are trying to achieve more, if you see what I mean.

Check out his often overlooked The Last Wave too, for more moody, Antipodean oddness.

Really good film. The only thing that disappointed me a bit was how it becomes more of a period drama in the second half, about the aftereffects of the disappearance. There's still enough of the atmosphere and weirdness of the first half to carry it through to the end, but personally I think the real appeal of the film lies with the incredibly eerie and mysterious Hanging Rock scenes, rather than the later problems at the orphanage.

Fantastic atmospheric film. The first time I saw it, I couldn't get it out of my mind.

"The Secrets of Hanging Rock" by Joan Lindsay yes it was originally the final chapter to the original book but the publishers requested it was removed to create a more mysterious ending.

like the start where its suggested the girls are being collected like butterflies.

was it rachael roberts' last film ?

i remember it rebooted the aussie film indusry (one man with a fosters and a kangeroo mate).

This is one of my favourites too, and it's quite a haunting film.

I like this film too, although I havent seen it for a while. The scene filmed at the base of the rock, with the entire party sat around in the shadows is one of the most haunting ever filmed. Still like, eerie, it is a gem of a scene.

There is a podcast called skeptoid that has an episode about this. I can't remember what was in it but it was interesting.

I saw this when I was a child and it was shown really late on TV. I wasn't allowed to stay up that late but did so anyway.

Was scared for weeks afterwards

Ssshhhh some lazy film producer wag might be reading this forum and it will only give them ideas to "re-imagine" it. A Hollywood treatment it can definitely do without.
