iPad Digital AV Screen issue
Izak
03-07-2012
I've just got a Apple Digital AV cable to connect my iPad 3 to my bedroom TV (a 2007 Samsung LE32R8). At first everything worked ok and the mirrored display was in proper 4:3 ratio with borders just left and right of the picture.

I then went into the 'Asphalt 7' game which supports full widescreen. My TV instantly put black borders all around the widescreen picture making it smaller than it should be. Then after that, I returned to the home screen and the borders at the top and bottom of the screen remained and have done since. I've tried all kinds of things - rebooting the iPad, unplugging the TV, reconnecting cables and even altering settings on the TV without success.

I tried the iPad on the newer Samsung TV in the living room and it works fine, no borders not even in Asphalt 7.

Can anyone advise on a fix for this? I've searched everywhere on the net and found no fixes. I've seen a number of people with the same problem and it has been mentioned its a TV issue, but so far I'm the only one whos display has gained these borders after using it for a while.

It sounds as if the TV is automatically changing its aspect ratio to something that obviously doesn't work as its supposed to. Have you tried adjusting the aspect ratio on the TV?

Thanks for your reply.

The TV has always been set to 'Just Scan'. If I change it to '16:9' the black borders are reduced but are still there, the picture is not flush with the edge of the screen.

If I put it to 4:3 mode the picture is all squashed as if it was a proper widescreen image being put in 4:3 mode.

I spotted someone with similar complaints on the Apple forums and a reply said it could be the iPad recognising the display incorrectly and compensating by adding borders top and bottom. Sadly there are no external display settings on the iPad anymore since iOS 5 so I cant 't even tell it the TV is 4:3.
