Is this Drive 2?

Little Tom playing tough guys is always good for a laugh. Where are all the real movie tough guys? There's nobody to compare to the likes of Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin anymore..

At least they didn't go down the route of casting Jason Statham.

Looks good.

6-foot-5, a 50 inch chest and blonde hair to be precise. None of which apply to Cruise in this adaptation.

Maybe they'll use CGI in the final version

Reacher is ex-military police not a homicide investigator. I can't think of a worse bit of mis-casting. I don't mind Tom Cruise but Jack Reacher he aint.

I'll admit I was at first disappointed when I heard who was to play Jack Reacher who in every book is described as 6' 5", built like a brick sh*t house, with hands like dinner plates . Never killed anyone who didn't deserve it and never had a woman turn him down. In other words, a man mountain and lets face it Tom Cruise is, shall we say........not !.

But that excerpt doesn't look too bad, so I'm prepared to reserve judgment, I think.

I remember hearing an interview with the author of the books. He said he was a bit nervous when he heard who got the role (imagine WWE's Ray Mysterio trying to be the Undertaker) but after the initial shock said Cruise was playing it perfectly from what he'd seen of the film early doors.

"Remember, you wanted this"
"Really?"

Delivered with as much menace as Kermit the Frog by well known shortarse Tom Cruise.

That's how the hell I got "laughable".

Shoe horn casting of the worst kind. Jack reacharound is more like it.

Because Cruise's production company is involved in the film and purchased the rights, Cruise had the ego to insert himself in as the star rather than let someone else do it. Its not like he had to audition or anything.

If Cruise had some integrity he would have said "look, i'm not right for the part, lets try someone like THIS!"

The comments about it from Lee Child on the subject scream "sell out" as well...

Being a great fan of the books I was so disappointed by this weird casting. It would have been better if Lee Child had been able to have casting control, but he is an author not a film maker. No doubt the financial reward he obtained made up for the miniaturisation of his hero.

The problem is with this character is that I can't think of anyone to play him - if Nick Nolte had been about 25 years younger...maybe. A mate suggested Daniel Craig if he bulked up a bit. Nobody really springs to mind.

Dwayne Johnson is the obvious choice (as far as size is concerned). He was the fourth highest paid actor last year, according to the BBC.

Daniel Craig is about 5'10 and already leads a franchise.

Ray Stevenson who I linked to. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0829032/

Others:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002907/

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1165110/

There are lots more suggested on the web. IMO it didn't need to be a big name as fans of the book will flood in if the casting is right.

What about someone like Paul Bettany he's done a few action movies now and is 6' 3"

Dolph Lundgren in his prime would have been perfect. He could actually pull it off even now.

He did cross my mind. Another actor who has just sprung to mind is Adam Baldwin - ok he's an inch too short and isn't blond http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000284/bio

Yep!

Especially at the fight scene with little Tommy facing the bad guys and they are all towering over him!

(obviously) the complete opposite visual scene that Lee Child's describes in his books..
